Turn up heat or bundle up

When it gets bitter cold do you turn up the heat or do you bundle up in layers and warm clothes? We try to keep warm with layers and warm clothes to keep the heat the same or only turn it up a degree or two so our bill doesnt go up.

We are doing both. When the plumber installed a new water heater last summer, he said to turn up the thermostat a few degrees to keep it warm enough to protect the pipes from freezing/bursting. Warm jammies and comforters are a necessity during winter in Wisconsin.

A little of both, but more layers cause I hate when it is too warm from the heat in the house, if that makes sense

Mostly bundle up. I get nauseous and feel sluggish if I turn the heat above 65 in my house. I turned it up to 68 earlier today based on info I saw on the news about turning the heat up when it's uber cold out, but I couldn't take it so I turned it back down. Usually I turn it down to 62 when I go to bed but i'll likely leave it at 65 tonite since we're expecting overnight wind chills in the -30 range.

Both & I am usually still cold. I just cannot stand the cold.

Bundle up. I keep the heat low. I hate being in a hot house.

Same here @FrostyBabe1. Must be very cold to even leave heat on overnight usually just turn off and put on lots of blankets. Run it while getting ready for work then right back off again for the day. We woke up to 26º so I left it on at 65 while I am at work today. Got home the other day and the thermostat said 63, it was bit nippy having it off all day.

Air conditioning is a whole other story I will run it so I can feel cold even in the cold winter months, but that is TEXAS.

@HouseMouse I wear my Northface fuzzy jackets in the house all winter with thick, long sweats!

When it's bitter cold I find that the house is warmer and no turning up the heat is necessary. The house is colder when the temp outside is above freezing.

@Pook,I have the same experience, do you by any chance have gas heat ?

We keep ours at 70 - if it gets really cold or it's really windy we will raise it up to 71/72.

I can't stand it any warmer than that, it gets stiffling in here. If it's still chilly then it's time to add a sweater and a blanket if we're sitting on the couch.

It's -1 out with a feels like of -26. I have the thermostat on 68. That's 1 degree warmer than usual. It's pretty comfortable. That's as high as it's going. If needed, add clothing.

I alternate. When I don't want the heat on, I put a down throw in the dryer for two minutes. I'll do it a few times. So comfy.

Keep the temp the same and turn on gas fireplace and add layers. I agree -- don't like the cold. After I come in from work I do not want to leave the house until I have to.

We just bundle up....I keep the heat at 64 degrees....DH and I usually enjoy a nice cup of tea and curl up with our fleece Throws in the evening while watching TV and surfing the net.😊 I’ve always found it easier to get warm than to cool off, so 64 is an all around perfect temp for us.

I turn up the heat a few degrees until I'm comfortable, and my furnace doesn't run as often. I don't like being cold, but I don't like having my home too warm either - I find the right temp for whatever the temperature is outdoors. I don't care if it costs me an ext $20/month in electric costs. I wear warmer clothes when it's this cold, but I refuse to sit around all bundled up under blankets or quilts or jackets.

Our thermostat sits on 72 year round, which is the magic number for all 4 of us. During bitter cold spells, I am usually in my pajamas and robe, with socks on my feet.
