Gold Medal Flour Recall

I just saw on the morning news that General Mills is recalling its 5 pound bags of Gold Medal unbleached flour due to salmonella concerns. These bags have a best if used by date of April 20, 2020. Sofar, there haven’t been any reports of anyone getting sick.

@Eileen in Virginia - Thanks for the alert. I bought Gold Medal flour yesterday, but I just looked and mine is a 2lb. bag with a May 2020 date. These recalls are happening too often.

Geez! One can only guess how many Christmas/holiday cookies and cakes were made, possibly using the tainted flour!

Thanks - I just bought a bag this week but it's bleached and 5/20 exp date.

Here’s a toll-free number for General Mills Consumer Relations for those who have to throw away the recalled flour: 1-800-230-8103. They could probably answer your question about the safety of eating it if it’s cooked.

I dont use flour or sugar and dont have them in the house. I havent home backed in a long time. This is awful though and happening far too often!!

I can't remember the last time I ate anything with white flour, much less buying a bag of white flour. I don't eat anything made with wheat...processed or whole.

Various places online say that cooking will kill salmonella ... but if you suspect bacteria ... don't take a chance.

Gee, Mr Cherry just made some of his peanut butter, suet, cakes for the birds. I think he used flour. I will have to check the brand?

Do you think it is safe for the birds, or should we throw it away?

There are many strains of the Salmonella bacteria. Some strains can make birds sick. I would throw it out. @cherry

@SilleeMeeI just checked, and it's Pillsbury. The birds have already eaten a ton of it. I would have felt awful, if it made them sick

With food inspections on hold due to the shut down, I have been trying to buy food frozen at least two months ago. I’ve also tried to buy food from Canada, since I live a couple of hours from the border. I fear a food poisoning outbreak or, worse, an airline tragedy. I think that is the only thing that will move our alleged representatives.

i guess i have to dump my flour out.

i always just put it into a lock and lock container and throw away the bag.

@Vivian I love to buy food from Canada too.They have much stricter inspections.I live close to the border too but still we get so much from Mexico here.I think Canadian grown produce is much nicer.

Whatnow, I so agree with you about Canadian products. Yesterday I bought a Canadian packaged variety pack of fresh sweet peppers, yellow, orange, and red. They were perfect. I have used some in a homemade tomato sauce and will use them tomorrow in a pot roast with other roasted vegetables. I assume they were inspected, unlike a couple of other veggies that were from US companies.
