OK, so first I'll describe how I got to this website. I was googling, "Do many Americans think the word petite means short"? Then I came upon some interesting things on this page....(We all know that can sometimes be 'dangerous').

These people are called "flat-earthers". Now I know some otherwise smart people think the man walking on the moon was a hoax (I read that the famous author Clive Clussler is one of them). I used to correspond with Clussler but this never came up!

However, I would think you'd really need to be a bit of a ding-bat to believe the world is flat.

Incidentally, what popped up when I asked about petite was things about bunny rabbits, etc.

OK, so with that....I'm going to go to my Sleep Number Bed, my Tootsie Roll pops and watch TV. I think if my husband was alive he'd ask if I loved this bed as much as him...quick answer...hummmm??? No!

There is a lot of misunderstanding about petite sizing, etc. I recommended to a friend that she buy petites because she said a lot of pants she buys are too long and she can't hem them. (I think she is 5'3" or 5'4") She said she can't buy petites because of what she weighs. To my understanding petites come in a lot of sizes. I buy petites, but my problem is that some are too long on me if the inseam is 29" or more. A lot of petites sold on QVC have that (too) long inseam. Plus QVC has never offered enough petites.

@Daysdee...petite to me means a certain height, I am 5'5 and cannot wear a petite pant because they would be to short, but I can wear some petite tops. I do not think it has anything to do with your size/weight.

But not all petite pants are considered short pants.

Petite pants can be shorter in the rise, too; but pants labeled short are just that-shorter in leg length.

I think Jeanne Bice's pants are considered "short", not petite.

I'm 5'1 and need "petite"; and usually the pants work out fine. But some specialty petite stores didn't have pants that fit just right for me. The pants were cut small all over, not just in length.

Boy is this true! When my cats were younger they were notorious for getting into everything, high or low. Talk about terrible 2s, they were that for several years. Had to really clear areas & eliminate plants, etc.

Now that they're much older (17), they behave better .. I think because they have no choice now. Their age prevents them from being mischievous.

Petite does not mean short. I think it refers to things like length of bones and wrist size.

One of my favorite StarTreks was entitled "For I Have Touched the Sky and the World is Hollow".

@Annabellethecat66 I found an article about petite clothing that explains the differences. It's called "What Petite Means in Women's Clothing" and is from the "Live About" website. The article is quite long, and I couldn't copy all of it.

Basic Differences in Fit

The most obvious thing you'll notice—and the most important—is that the clothing is shorter in length.

Sleeves, skirts, leg lengths, and tops are all shorter. Because clothing manufacturers cut to their own specifications, the length may be the only difference in some cases. Higher-quality petite pieces have other design differences, such as higher armholes, narrower shoulders, and proportionally sized details.

Petite pants should have a shorter rise, and a petite dress should have a shorter bodice.

Heightwise I fall into the Petite Category however I am short waisted and most all petite pants are too short for me.

The word petite means small. Some designers/manufacturers seem to think petite is more appealing than short so they use it for all sizes. A person who is 5'2" and a 2x is not petite, she is short.

Confusing because tall is tall no matter if she's an extra small or extra large. So they must think that being tall is good but short is not good while being small/petite is acceptable.

I've always wondered how the flat earth society explains the sunrise and sunset every day? Unless we are being flipped like a pancake, it wouldn't happen.

I'm 5'......need petite for the inseam. Don't need any extra fabric sticking out in front of me when I sit down...... You know what I mean by that.

Have found some nice Alfred Dunner cords in a PPM.... They are perfect for me. Ordered 3 pairs.

I have ordered quite a few pants from Shop National and D&C pants from the Q..... All the petites have been perfect. So, will continue ordering the way I have been.
