Well that was sneaky

I was watching the clearance items on HSN and went to one of the items online to read the reviews. I noticed the default is for ratings highest to lowest. I know on QVC there is a choice of how to list the reviews, but at least the default is by date.

I guess that also makes it easy for them to do a screenshot and say in their presentations "Look at all the 5-star reviews."

I thought it was always like that. I just usually click the option to switch from low to high, however. My recollection is that most places "lead" you to the best reviews first.

That’s how 99.99% of businesses have it.

The default is highest rating to lowest.

No ‘sneaky’. It’s Marketing 101.

I don't think it's sneaky. Of course they're going to only talk about the best reviews.

You can look online for yourself for the negative reviews.

Nothing sneaky about it...there are several options availabe to view feedback on HSN including lowest to highest, I use that option & like that the negatives are grouped together. Most retailers put positive feedback up front...their business is to sell.

in this universe (!) does Highest-to-Lowest ratings.

Every does follow by their example.

I prefer to sort by most recent,

a 3 y/o 5 star might not mean much if the product has changed in the interim

When I go to Amazon the reviews are not highest to lowest, nor are they by date. They seem to be a mixture. They'll go from 5 stars to 2 stars to 4 stars, but the dates are random too.

Actually, as long as I'm given the option to sort in my preferred way, I don't give much thought to what a vendor's default presentation might be. JMHO.

They didn't try to hide anything from you. They didn't lie to you. It is up to the consumer to do the research on the product, it always has been, and will be

Amazon has "top ratings" as their default. I'm not exactly sure what that means though. The first rating on a product I was looking at was 1 star from Nov. 2017. The one below that was 5 stars. The other choice is "most recent. They do have a chart with the # of reviews for each star. You can click on that and read the reviews.

Etsy's reviews go by date.

Nordstrom goes by date.

Those are the main places that I've been shopping online lately.
