Medical Ads

Is anyone else tired of all of the medical ads that are on TV these days? And on the radio too.

There are so many of these ads over and over! Strokes, Heart Attacks, Cancer, Side Effects from Meds, Etc.

I am lucky I can forward through them if on a recorded show or I mute them if Im watching TV.

I rue the day they were allowed on television! I also think about 1/3 to 1/2 of the pages of magazines are comprised of them. I think pharmaceuticals should be discussed with one's doctor, place of purchase , and heavily researched by individual. Shouldn't be in commercials with butterflies , unicorns, and happy, happy people dancing around.

As of the Spring, they are going to have to include the price of those brand name meds so maybe we'll see less of them.

I'm tired of all the lawyer ads. Got hit by a truck? Run over by a motorcycle? Tripped over someone's curb? Someone's grass stained your white pants? Stepped in dog poop? Time to call a law firm. There is a specialty in every field.

There are indeed a lot of them but they don't bother me. I just don't mute the tv so I don't hear them.

There are an awful lot of them. I wish they wouldn't be allowed to advertise drugs at all.

I watch a lot of DVR'd shows, so we just fast forward through them all.

I hope that does the trick and we get less of them.....

I think decisions on medications should be left to our personal Health Care Professional that knows our particular health issues and medical history instead of an Advertising Agency's video "fantasy" showing how perfect life becomes after taking this prescription drug---Maybe they should force them to also include someone experiencing hosptalization because of bad side effects in their video presentations .....

Yep, after prescription drug ads, lawyer ads are second most annoying category...

There's one lawyer here that rules the airwaves, you can't even escape him by watching the cable channels---the only channel he's not on is TCM the only the commercials they allow are for their own products.... And now all the other law firms have stepped up their commercial air time

@Tricolor It's a reminder to make sure you let your doctor know your allergies or to let you know you might not tolerate it so you can be your own advocate and keep the doctor from making a mistake with your medical care.

@Spurt The reason the companies do it is to get back their R&D costs which are astronomical. I get that and they are entitled to it but it could be done in a more forthcoming and truthful manner which is what I think we are all looking for and what the FDA is now requiring somewhat of them.

It is my understanding that New Zealand and the US are the only countries that allow drug ads on TV. They should be banned here. Along with the ads for lawyers!

@CherryHugs Yes!... I love it when they go through 2 minutes of all the dangerous aspects of taking the drug.... one being DEATH..... Goodness.... lets stop consipation and just have to worry about DEATH to stop it

The U.S. and New Zealand are the only 2 countries in the world that allows it .. I posted an article awhile back and most money goes back to advertising than to R&D.....In the top 10, only Roche spent more on R&D than on sales and marketing.

I think its mostly greed like the head of that pharmaceutical co and the epi pen ...And they tried to stop the manufacturing of my blood pressure med because they felt they could make more money on another version that had more serious side effects too...course they didnt care about the side effects...Public pressure from patients and doctors caused them to change their mind....especially after the Epi pen incident....

I also saw a very interesting investigative report show on the pharmacuetical companies, there was a wide range of panelists ---doctors, researchers, pharmacuetical company employees current and retired...very interesting...lets just say they have their own version of politics inside their industry...

The American Medical Association took a hard-line position on these ads in 2015 by calling for a complete ban, saying “direct-to-consumer advertising also inflates demand for new and more expensive drugs, even when these drugs may not be appropriate.”

Drugmakers were on track to spend an estimated $6.4 billion on DTC advertising in the U.S. last year, up 5% from 2015, according to Kantar. In 2012, spending for pharmaceutical TV ads was the 12th-largest category. By last year, drug ads were sixth.Mar 16, 2017

And when the drug companies invest more in ads than research and development...it just makes lawyers rich when consumers sue the drug companies for complications not mentioned nor uncovered...

Sometimes the timing is almost ironic in airing of the commercials....First comes the drug ad, followed by a lawyer ad telling how someone can be compensated in a lawsuit because of complications from the drug ......

@Spurt I hear you but no company is going to even try and discover new medications for us if there is no money in it for them and our government isn't going to give it to them out of hand just to try.

Over 90% of drug trials fail. There's a fine line there and I don't want to see us get tipped into the medical dark ages because companies won't take the R&D risk.

Other countries are smaller and have socialized medicine which means the governments are probably subsidizing the R&D with tax money so that their companies don't have to make it back on their own in the marketplace like we do without the grants.

Believe me I get the frustration with pharmaceuticals. We have concrete evidence now of therapies that are working for Allzheimer's patients and no one will fund the research because they want the one miracle drug that they will make a killing off of.

Too bad clinical research shows the brain most likely can't be cured with a pill but a rather a combination of therapies that make a world of verifiable differences. Can't even get publicity for it unless you are in that community and happen to stumble across the new research showing the strides private doctors and researchers are making on their own. Burns me to no end.

I understand what your saying and yes there's wonderful strides being made in R&D etc

The AMA was mad that simple lifestyle changes and changes in nutrition werent mentioned in ads as an alternative treatment to drugs for minor health issues...Some drug companies say lets add another pill, and yet another one for that pill's side effects......

Wonderful research is being conducted on using good bacteria found in food and avoidance of processed sugars and "the gut" to prevent and combat certain illnesses and disease, but the big drug companies dont like this because it hurts their profits......

Blame the opiod crisis on drug lobbies. And a lot of research is leaning towards drugs causing the increase in suicide and violence we are seeing in adolescents...Too many times the treatment is focused on giving a pill (its easier) instead of counseling

You have to look hard to find investigative reports because a lot of the news shows are sponsored by--- guess what...drug advertsing....You right it sure is frustrating
