Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

Hello,

I just had a new roof installed. The whole process has been a nightmare. I was expecting to get warranty information/paperwork. I have been given nothing.

If anyone has had this done:

Am I supposed to get written warranty information? The company is acting like that is unreasonable.

I was told the roof would be guaranteed for 50 years, but none of the initial paperwork states anything at all other than the total price and the color of the shingles.

I went through the Home Depot to get it done.

Nothing the salesman told me has actually turned out to be true.

I paid in advance and they also managed to lose the payment information for 2 weeks, even when I submitted proof, they still "couldn't find it in their "system".

This is the first time I have had to have a roof done. The original roof lasted 30 years until Hurricane Michael came through and tore shingles off the roof then I had some leaking into the attic. So I really was clueless and thought Home Depot would be a good option. Apparently I was wrong.

Thank you in advance for any information.

I had a roof replaced last year....I signed a contract that detailed all materials, work & cleanup to be done, it also included the shingles manufacturer warranty & the roofing company 12yr warranty on their work. The roofer came highly recommended & did a wonderful job. I avoided the big box home stores because I didn't want go get stuck between the store & the installer blaming each other for any problems. Good Luck!

They should give you a contract. I would call to talk to the manager about getting one.

We have a signed Contract on our roof. It states the breakdown prices on the roof, felt paper, vents, turbines, labor etc. Shows the brand, color how many sq ft., how many year warranty on shingles, how many years labor warranty etc.

How will you get warranty work done without one?

I don't think anyone guarantees a roof for 50 years. That sounds like an unreasonable length of time. Could the 50 years be pertaining to the quality of the shingles used? I seem to remember when I redid my roof that was how it was worded 30 year or 40 year shingles.

Without knowing anything about the corporate structure of Home Depot, I can report that we had an interesting experience with a Home Depot roof when we moved to our present home about 3 years ago.

We were in the sale process when the realtor representing us called and asked if we’d like to have a new roof.

DH asked how much it would cost, and Ms. Realtor replied “Nothing”.

The original roof, a light color, was stained but functional, but we figured “New? SURE!!”, and went for it. The seller was offering us the option because it was covered by a Home Depot warranty.

After the roofing job was finished, some issues with flashing were revealed, and they were addressed vigorously and repaired, all under an explicit Home Depot warranty.

Everything we or the original seller had done has been as a result of the seller’s warranty. I don’t remember the duration of our present guarantee, but I’ve never heard of a roof guarantee that exceeded 25 years.

Hope this helps.

Hmm, home depot, probably not a good choice I am sorry to say. We went through HD for our wall to wall a few years ago. Yes we got a guarantee but it was the 2nd group of 2 install guys we were sent to install the 2nd floor. We did the project in 2 installs, had to for obvious reasons. First move out the furn from the 1st floor, move it all back then a month later the 2nd floor. The 1st 2 guys, Mexican, were the BEST. The 2nd 2 guys American totally stinky cigarette smoking aholes were horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My bedrooms absolutely stunk of those 2 for days, I kid you not!!!!

Here's what's totally wrong in working with places like Home Depot, Menard's, Lowes, they FARM OUT the work they profess they'll do for you with 'home' projects of the like. Terrible, horrible SUBCONTRACTORS who are toss-offs from REAL contractors who DO give you proper warranties, proper work.

My advise? Never go to stores like this unless you're buying goods at lesser amts of money ONLY to truly do it yourself or have your own REAL contractors do the work.

Lesson learned the hard way.

Try to get satisfaction by going to the Home Depot in person for a start. If they do not help go to the Better Business Bureau. When writing a Bad review of a company you sometimes hear from them very quickly. Never pay in full for any job. When money is owed you always have leverage.

You need both warranties. The one for the materials used (this is the 50 year warranty) and the one for the work done/labor (usually a year).

You should get warranty information for the materials used from the manufacturer of your roofing system.

The warranty information for the labor will be on the contract you signed with Home Depot.

If you know the name of the roofing system (it might be in your contract), you can try contact them directly.

I had a new roof and new windows and back door installed this year. I contacted the roofing company after the install and they sent off the request to the manufacturer for the roofing warranty certificates for me and mailed them to me. My manufacturer was GAF/Timberline HD for the roof system.

It is apparently not standard to ask for these as my roofing company seemed surprised at the request, but did comply without question.

Hello VaBelle35,

Thank you for replying. I bought GAF/Timberline HD shingles/ roof system that is supposed to be warrantied for 50 years and 150mph wind.

I really appreciate you letting me know the manufacturer would email me the warranty on that. I had no idea that was a possibility.

I have asked again for warranty information from Home Depot...the contractor assured me today that he will get it to me and will get someone out to fix a few things that aren't quite right.

You can actually register your warranty online at the GAF website.

You do need the paperwork from the contractor though.

we had our roof changed about 4 yrs ago in May.

We did not get any kind of warranty paperwork on the roof. We had a roofing company do the work. Shingles are supposedly good for 25 yrs wear.

We had new tar paper (or what ever that is called now a days), new wood put down in place of the any bad wood.

Our roof was 25 yrs old when we had new roof put on
