Now that Florida has banned greyhound racing there are 8000-15,000 dogs that need a home. Or else.

Until there is some avenue for the adoption of these dogs, proposals for adopting them seem to be premature. To my knowledge there's no way for anyone to sign up now.

To anyone thinking of adopting a greyhound - first do your homework. Due to a rare situation - I had one in my house- - and they are like having a horse if you're used to having a small normal size dog. A greyhound can take a steak right off your kitchen table. (this was a rescue greyhound that got loose in my neighborhood and was freezing) - so I brought it in..................with my Cocker Spaniel..................was so happy when the foster mom took him/her 'home". But they a tall !!

My neighbor had a beautiful greyhound that had retired from racing so she adopted him.

He was the sweetest most gentle dog ever.

She said when he did run, he could take off like a streak but he preferred his naps! My kind of dog.

One day we all were out in the courtyard, several of us just talking and we were there over an hour. The entire time, Vanguard was leaning against my leg and he could have been a statue.

Her daughter said, "Mom, this isn't a dog, he's a couch!" lol!

Before I knew him, I saw him casually walking along the sidewalk next to a street. I got out and went up to him, got some kind of scarf or something I had in my car and led him into my car. He happily went like he knew he was going home. I knew he was my neighbor's dog but we had never met.She said the door opened and off he went so you have to be careful with them.

I just adored him and would often go over just to visit. What a great dog!

I adopted a grey from the Phoenix track years ago.

The are the cat of the dog world. Extremely gentle and quiet. Very clean because they have little body oil. They have so little body fat, they cannot swim so beware if you have a pool.

They like a walk or a quick sprint and then they are total couch potatoes. You must always have them on a leash outside. Even the most well behaved grey will be off like a shot if they spy a piece of paper blowing a block away.

They are a marvelous dog for someone who likes a clean, gentle, funny companion.

Her name was Molly, sweet as could be. I saw her owner at some point without her, and she said that Molly had died. I just loved that dog.

Just recently I had the same experience with another greyhound. I told the owner about Molly's leaning on my leg, and she said that Greyhounds just want to be loved.

Living with a big dog presents a whole list of new challenges to which you may not be accustomed. Not only was my big male collie (avatar) a counter surfer, but he would steal canned goods from the pantry, take them outside (dog door). He would pierce the can with his teeth and lap up the liquid; eventually he'd tear open the can and devour the solids. He favored soups and knew on which shelf they were kept. He never cut himself or damaged teeth. He would steal any food he could reach and it wasn't just him. My collie girls were foodies also.

WOW - interesting read. I'd never even seen a grey in person until it appeared in my driveway! Sure took me back - thankfully I had an appointment with a siding salesman - figuring color/cost - I thought he brought HIS dog to the appointment! He said - no it isn't MY dog. With him here I felt brave to bring the grey in for warmth after trying towels on the porch - dog continued to shiver. Finally saw woman walking down the street looking left/right and right/left again...........like looking for something. So I ran out and asked if she was looking for a dog.........YES. Said she had 2 more greys at home - she's a foster mom. Interesting afternoon - and grey loved my dog's stuffed toys - they were flying everywhere. end of story.

Having worked in U.K. Spain and here now in U.S. with the closing down of greyhound racing I can tell you Greyhounds are the most wonderful pets you can own especially good for retirees - they only need to be walked - not good for joggers or runners. They are couch potatoes love a warm bed and often will not get up to go out! Do not believe just because they raced they wanted too.

Most of them are kept in harsh conditions so when they get a warm, loving home will relay you with love and affection.

When a track closed just recently the 'loving' owners all just walked away very few of them took their dogs home - or even tried to rehome them - and, unfortunately, we found many beautiful dogs poisoned and left.

There are many adoption/foster agencies in every area - just google greyhound rescue - they are well worth the time and give back so much.

Funny happening - our current Greys will not wear their winter coats I think they believe they are wearing racing colors again and do not want to race we put them on and they stop dead not doing this!

They don't know what stairs or Windows are. They are captivated by throw rugs and pillows. Mine would carry the bath mat all over the house.

She also was addicted to Twinkies. They used them as a training aid at the track. I used them to teach her the dog door, then no more! 😁 . She loved green beans and yogurt.

Another interesting fact. Greyhounds have a blood type universal to all dogs. My adoptee was a blood donor for 6 months after they retired her from the track.

Yes, we have trained many Greys about living in a home. The t.v. was a big event our big boy Joe was always trying to see behind it to find the people.

We also had a Christmas decoration - a bell - and every time we rang it our Greys would leap up ready to race!

Sorry about the indent above iPad doing its own thing.
