What about the Wild Animals?

With all these fires in California, the wild animals have no where to go. I was sitting here thinking about that and it is very sad. I don't know how they can survive. Hopefully, the domestic animals are taken with their owners.

@Katcat1 My heart immediately considers the wildlife and how they suffer when these fires occur. Unfortunately, when we open our hearts, a part of the process is being sensitive to the suffering of all sentient beings. I respect and share your sadness.

The loss of wildlife is one of the great tragedies of wildland fires. Somehow, enough seem to survive for the continuation of the species.

They do have somewhere to go. Their instincts guide them away from the fire areas. No, there is no guarantee that every one will survive.

Im more worried about the domestic animals that now need homes. Although I’m in CA, I’m not near the fire danger areas. My local SPCA accepted about 40 pets from other areas today.

While it's estimated that thousands of wild animals died or will die in these fires, wild animals have a great natural instinct to survive.

I read a news article yesterday about the Camp fire, where a man alerted some of his friends and neighbors when he saw the fire coming over the ridge and they set off in 5 vehicles to escape.

He was in the lead vehicle when he noticed that no one was behind him on the only narrow road out. The vehicle behind him got stuck in the road and blocked the other cars in behind him.

As the fire was closing in, he noticed a fox run down a trail and he jumped out of his car to follow him.

The fox led him straight to a stream with 3 ft. of water where he and the fox laid submerged in the stream as the fire roared over and past them.

Sadly, when he went to look for his friends, they had all died in their cars.

While he may have been smart to follow the fox and survived as a result, at the same time, when he left his car, he left his 2 Chihuahuas behind in the back seat.

The dogs did survive the fire, since his car was much further ahead of the other cars on the road but when he found his friends, he took video of the burned out cars, skeletons and all and posted it on Youtube.

So heartless, both for leaving his dogs and posting the video, I was just disgusted.

As the Woolsey Fire continued to rip through Thousand Oaks, Calif. Friday morning, several wild rabbits were forced to flee their habitats and enter the city. A video of several rabbits huddled against a wall was shared by CBS 2 news.

"The little bunnies there, quite a few of them, we've seen trying to escape the flames and get out, get to safety because their home, their habitat is on fire," ....

Fire fighters found a horse in a swimming pool.

I don't know if the owners left it there to survive or if the horse found it and did what the fox did, ran toward the nearest water.

Yes, it is heartless. One of his friends was a paraplegic who died in his car with his Mom, his caretaker.

Regarding leaving domestic pets, I bet it's the last thing that most owners would ever think of doing.

But there are instances when death by fire is imminent and getting a pet to safety is impossible. It's tragic.

@suzyQ3 No. When you live in a place where these things happen you need a plan in place. If you want to show off horses to your friends then get a vehicle that can transport them. Dogs and cats go in hte car. It's common sense.
