Another good subject to talk about. I am guilty of this some times. But sometimes I wish I could tell folks to sit on their hands. When I see someone doing this on TV and there is someone sitting close to that person, it looks like it wouldn't take much for that person to get hit in the face. Some folks just can't talk unless they use their hands. First it is distracting, and second it doesn't make getting your point across to be that much more interesting.

I do a little bit.

I try to be conscious not to be too animated when I talk.

I find it very distracting with people's hands are flyng all over the place.

Of course!

Whether it’s one-on-one, group or audience,

that’s part of Toastmasters 101 to use hand/body gestures

to emphasis your point.

Yes! If someone were off in the distance, out of earshot, they might think I was leading an orchestra.

Some of my friends do the same .... it must be hilarious watching us sitting there having a conversation with arms and hands flying through the air!

Not to long ago, I "swiped" a (plastic) glass right off the table in the diner while having a conversation during lunch.

ETA: I just recalled something from a publc speaking class in college. We had to give prepared presentations or were given topics for impromptu talks for most of the classes. I got positive comments from instructor (well kown speaker - but who shall remain nameless here) for gestures during talks.

In normal conversation, I don't do it. I find myself doing it when giving presentations. At some point, I see my arms flying around and I can't seem to stop them. 😀

My maternal grandparents came from Italy. Of course I use hand gestures while speaking, probably even on the phone! My husband and I rented an apartment in Rome instead of getting a hotel room on one of our trips. It was great! Our windows faced the street and there was a restaurant with big windows right across from us. We'd watch the people dining and the hands never stopped gesturing. BTW, dinner went on for hours! We are so used to fast food in this country, even in nice, sit down restaurants, the length of time it took for dinner was astonishing. I can't wait to return!

I'm sure I probably do when it's normal conversation but I can also read situations where it might be inappropriate. I also have a habit of sometimes touching people when I talk to them one on one, just on the arm or shoulder, nothing suggestive. I'm a hugger too. Guess I'm just a big rule breaker, but it's not going to stop me unless someone specifically asks me to refrain. Society is so uptight about this kind of stuff. I think expressive hands, gestures, and human touch are part of the way we communicate.

To me, excessive “talking with the hands” is a distraction to the conversation.

No I do not. I find it to be annoying and inpolite, but I notice many people doing it. Everyone has their own style of communicating.

Someone once mentioned that I was "bouncy" when I talked. That didnt work well in interviews, so I trained myself to keep my hands neutral in professional settings.

I do notice though I chat with my hands and "palm up" only when speaking to men. It's an inconscious gesture indicating cooperation, sincerity and at times, a wish to be courted! its just a natural gesture for me.
