Telling her that no one likes that pie and she'd just be wasting her time is unneccessarily mean, IMO. I would never phrase it that way or be so blunt even if it was someone I felt very comfortable with.

For years and years my sister has brought one of the pies we have with our Thanksgiving meal.

It used to be pecan or chocolate.

The last few years she started bringing a pumpkin chiffon pie, which none of us care for. We like traditional baked pumpkin pie.

This year I asked if she would bring a pecan or apple pie. She said no, she wants to bring chiffon pie.

So my option, tell her the truth? Or let her bring the chiffon and I just go ahead and bake the tradition pumpkin too?

I could make apple and pecan along with the pumpkin so it looks like we are having all the pies you could want for a holiday. Can you have too many pies?

You could do one of two things. Since shes your sister just tell her you and others dont care much of the chiffon style pie. Or just make your own and not say a word and when she has a lot of pie left she may ask why, then you could tell her. No IMO you cant have to many pies.

If it were me I would want to know that people did not like whatever it was I wanted to bring.

I don't like to be too pushy with people, especially my sister. That does that to me

and I hate it.

I would just tell her no one cares for that kind of pie. You are not lying and that is not being in anyway hurtful. It is a pie. It is stating a fact, What is the point of bringing one that no one wil eat? To me that is not contributing anything to the meal.

If you don’t feel comfortable saying something, then don’t. Just make two of your pies or make your usual pie and have something else that requires no extra work on your part like ice cream or cookies,

I do not know the "right" answer. BUT here is what I would do. Say nothing. Make the pies that your guests and you will eat.

She brings her pumpkin chiffon pie. And when she is leaving send the uneaten pumpkin chiffon pie home with her.

I always send leftover turkey or other items home with my guests. And sending the pie home with her would be a great way to get rid of it. Maybe her eating the entire pie herself will make her tire of it.

I would tell her not to make a large pie as most of the family prefers the traditional pumpkin which you will be adding to the desserts."..said in a non confrontational tone of voice to make sure she doesn’t have hurt feelings and hopefully she will change her mind and offer a different pie choice.

Our gathering is small - 9 people and I usually make dessert. I always do more than one and have experimented in the past. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm the first to say - okay, this will not be made again. Same with side dishes - etc.

We are quite honest - there are picky eaters and may not try it. I'm all in for leftovers which are the best since the day of - it is too much food.

I once made a Banofee Pie and the crust was rock hard. Can't even cut it with a knife - it was hacked into pieces. It was tasty if you have good jaws. Some that didn't have good teeth or want to save their teeth ate the filling but wouldn't attempt the crust. I laughed and jawed my way through.

My brother's family even took some of the leftover pie - he msg me that he is jawing the pie the next day.

You can always ask your sister - we MISSED your pecan pie - can you bring that in additon to the chiffon pie. If she says no - and it is on the table - she can't say she wasn't forwarned.

There can never be too many desserts.

When you have the same guests for a holiday year after year, you have a fairly good idea of what they are going to bring. My SIL used to bring a pie from one of her kid's fundraisers every Thanksgiving. Frankly, I never thought they were very good. Eventually I would just make my pie(s) or desserts not even caring what kind of pie she would bring because there was a good chance no one was going to eat hers anyway.

Do you give your guests take home care packages? I do since I don't want to have a ton of desserts around for me to eat...DH doesn't eat sweets, my kids leave and there is only me to eat a lot of cake & pie! I give my guests lots of the left overs.

You can give your sister her pie back when she leaves....maybe she'll get the message if no one eats it.
