We had 2 cocker spaniels which have been gone since 2000 & 2004.

We never got another dog. Don't want to take them to the Vet to have them put down again. It's so hard to do.

My heart is still so broken after having to make that decision for my beloved 10 year old Husky, Bandit on June 22nd that I still cry daily. Still find myself wondering if we made the right decision. I had to make that awful decision also on Jan. 23, 2014 for my big boy, Brock which also broke my heart and think of him all the time, but I still had Bandit to help me through that tough time. I just don't think I can go through that again.

@Sue98, Many, many years ago a German Shephard showed up in my yard. She was exhausted, filthy and skinny. My dog took an immediate shine to her. I fed her, cleaned her up, put up posters, called local dog shelters, and advertised in our local Pennysaver looking for her owners. I called our Animal Control Officer to be told if no one claimed her within 10 days she was mine if I wanted her. Well, yes, I did want her. After the 10 day period I took her to our Vet to find out she had heartworm and was pretty sick. He recommended I turn her over to an animal shelter. I asked, "what will they do?" He said they'd put her down. Well, that wasn't an option. I had her treated for heartworm (which the Vet estimated she had for a few years) and a couple of thousand dollars later she was as well as she was going to get. I had her for 5 1/2 years and she was the absolute love of my life. She adored me and me her. When she died I thought I'd never get over her, or go through that again.

Well six months after I lost her, I saw a picture of a dog on a bulletin board who had heartworm, was in desperate need of a good home and she was such a cute mutt, I had to have her. She was only 1 1/2 old at the time and now 13 years later she's still with us and brings us joy and she loves us to pieces. Shortly after adopting her my beloved MIL passed away and I

took her dog too. The two of them were best buds. We lost him last year to kidney failure and it took my girl along time to get over his passing.

All I'll say is this, there are so many dogs out in the world in need of good dog parents and if we can provide those beautiful animals with good loving homes, we should. Our hearts can hold love for each and every one of them as they, like people have their own personalities, quirks and traits to love them all.

I feel that way right now. My dear old cat Arrow died this past May and I so miss his companionship. I cannot bring myself to take on another pet, risking similar investment in love and care and the inevitable future of parting company again.

I once had a great little cat some years ago, in my 20’s. When she died, I did not take on another cat for 6 years to get past the sadness. Then I found the motivation to be a pet parent again. That was many years and many kitties ago. I had somehow found more flexibility and sturdiness in facing loss.

I am now 70 and I know I could not bear the level of sadness I felt letting go of Arrow. As much as I would love the cuddle and interaction with another cat (or even a dog), I know I can’t bear the pain of worry in sickness and loss if it’s a decision to face. I avoid the very good a sweet pet could give me because of my utter dread of repeat intense grief shound I outlive another one.

(I think your post would have been better placed in Pet Lovers, not Community Chat, for a more relevant group of responses. Just an opinion)

The last one I lost broke my heart, but he was a rescue and after a couple of months (he passed 2 days before Halloween), it occurred to me that he would want me to give another dog a forever home with treats and food and a good bed because he loved all those things. So I adopted Kevin and his sister, Lexi, loves him like she loved Ed. And it turns out that Kevin loves treats, healthy food and a good bed too.

my dog is sick with cancer and once he goes I know I will miss him a lot. but I will not be getting any more pets. I am not home that much at home so I do not want a pet to be home all day plus if I go out of town got to find someone to watch them. Plus my dog I have now get very upset when you take him to the groomer and a lot of people cannot handle him. So I do not want to deal with another picky pet.

DH and I have put down 2 dogs and one died at the vet's office - totally heartbreaking but our house is not a home with out a dog....our current dog is just so darn cute and probably the best behaved dog we have ever had...we will probably always have a dog as long as we can care for it properly.....

I have been worrying about what I'd do when I lose my precious 13 year old beagle. Because of my age, I don't think that I will rescue another dog. I have no one in my life who would be able or willing to take my dog when I pass away. If only I could predict my future. I know that I will be terribly lonely without a dog. I try to make the most of every day with my girl now.

I had a beautiful Samoyed for 14 years. I was so heart broken when I had to help him pass that I didn't want another pet.

Well, 10 years later I got a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy and then 11 months later, I got another one. So, now I have two of them.

They, like most CKCS have many health issues. We do what we have to keep them going. These two little dogs have stolen our hearts....they are more loved than any other pets we have ever had.

They are almost 7 and 8 years old. When they are gone, we will not be getting another pet. Reasoning, we don't want to out live our pets and leave them all alone.

We lost our first dog in 2006. From the time we adopted him til his death 11 years later, he was such a bad boy. A lover, but naughty. We missed him so much and swore “no more”. Too painful. But a year later we adopted again. Our old girl is perfect and we swear our naughty boy sent us a “good one” to make up for his shenanigans.

We say we will not adopt again after this one dies, but if you google how many animals are euthanized a day, you will understand why we most likely will

I'm so sorry for your loss @Sue98. I know that pain far too well; each time I lose a dog my heart is broken. But I continue to get another one because my home is not complete without a dog. Losing them is such a horrible, awful experience, but having them brings such joy and happiness that I can't imagine not having one (or, in my case, two).

I hope you find peace.

I have cats and this is why I'll always have two. Much easier when one passes to have another one to come home to. When the time is right I get a new one and I try not to wait too long because I don't want the lone one to get too used to being alone.

My last cat was the greatest cat ever. I tell my new cat he was sent by him. About a month after the old guy passed I felt compelled to look at the shelter website and there was a tiny kitty that I knew was meant to be mine. He's turned out to be the sweetest thing, much like his late brother, which was just what I needed.

We've always had from 2-4 (more than 2 is really too many) doxies ever since we married 35 years ago. Three years ago our bad boy: Darth Vader, passed unexpectedly passed. We were away for weekend, so our adult son, and his three year old took Darth to ve where he was put down. My Grandson was really traumatized by the loss so we replaced him immediately with our little sweetheart, Lucy. I always tell my grandson that Darth Angel sent us Lucy. I think it's true.
