From the NY Post citing the Boston Globe:

"Infamous Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was killed Tuesday, shortly after being transferred to a federal prison in West Virginia, a law enforcement source told The Post.

A fellow inmate with Mafia ties is under investigation in the slaying at the Hazelton federal penitentiary in Bruceton Mills."

OK, I'm not new to the world but I don't remember him. I know I've heard the name but don't know what he did. Of course I know what a gangster is but tell me about him.

According to the FBI, Bulger served as a confidential informant for the Bureau beginning in 1975, a claim Bulger denies.[5] However, as a result, the FBI largely ignored his organization in exchange for information about the inner workings of the rival Italian-American Patriarca crime family.[6][7][8] Beginning in 1997, the media exposed criminal actions by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials tied to Bulger. For the FBI especially, this caused great embarrassment.[9][10][11]

On December 23, 1994, Bulger fled Boston and went into hiding after being tipped off by his former FBI handler, John Connolly, about a pending indictment under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). For sixteen years, he remained at large. For twelve of those years, Bulger was second on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, behind Osama bin Laden.[12]

On June 22, 2011, Bulger was arrested outside an apartment in Santa Monica, California along with his long-time girlfriend Catherine Greig. Bulger was 81 years old at the time.[1][13][14][15] Soon after, Bulger and Greig were extradited to Massachusetts and taken under heavy guard to the United States Courthouse on Boston Harbor, which had to be partially closed for their arrival. Greig pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud, and conspiracy to commit identity fraud and was sentenced to eight years in prison in June 2012. Bulger did not seek bail and remained in custody at the Plymouth County House of Correction in Plymouth, Massachusetts.[citation needed]

On June 12, 2013, Bulger went on trial for 32 counts of racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and weapons charges, including complicity in nineteen murders.[16]

On August 12, 2013, Bulger was found guilty on 31 counts, including both racketeering charges, and was found to have been involved in eleven murders.[17] On November 14, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus five years for his crimes by U.S. District Judge Denise Casper.[18] Bulger became inmate number 02182-748,[19] incarcerated for life at the United States Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida.[20]

I just read this a few minutes ago and on the day of his transfer. Did a bit of research after seeing he was killed. Miss Iceland 1974 was the person who turned him in for 2 million reward. Lived in the same apt. complex has Bulger and his longtime girlfriend.

She appeared in a 1981 Different Strokes episode and 1979 More American Graffiti.

I bet the $$ came in handy.

He lived a life out in the open for years, they finally got him,neighbors could not believe who he was,lived in a apartment with his girlfriend. had guns hidden in there, no great loss he got what he deserved.

Well he is gone and now he isn’t breathing air and taking up space and resources.Karma can sometimes take awhile but she always prevails.

I know I was shocked to read he lived there for 15 years @goldensrbest. I guess cutting all ties and staying in the same place under the radar was the key.

I wonder how they know he was killed vs. died a natural death. After all, he was 89 and found unresponsive by prison authorities.

He was 89 years old so whether it was murder or natural causes, it doesn't matter a bit to anyone. Well, maybe it matters to his long time girlfriend, the one who gave up her own life and went on the lam with him.

Article I saw said he was finally arrested in 2012 and convicted in 2014, which mean he didn't spend much time in prison. Racketeering, fraud, extortion....the usual...they also "linked" him to 11 of the 19 murders associated with his crew but he was not convicted of the murders. Karma, baby...Karma!

I am not defending his criminal history, but he was doing his time. No one deserves to be killed in prison.
