Can this be the end of an era?

NEW YORK (AP) — Sears has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, buckling under its massive debt load and staggering losses.

Sears once dominated the American retail landscape. But the big question is whether the shrunken version of itself can be viable or will it be forced to go out of business, closing the final chapter for an iconic name that originated more than a century ago

I have fond memories of cutting paper dolls from Sears and Roebuck catalogs. Yes it’s hard to they filed for bankruptcy but more and more people would rather shop online than in person. A sign of the future.

Never really shopped at Sears. DH would pop in once in a while for tools but all I ever did was return Land's End items at Sears.

I'm not sure how much online shopping harmed Sears; if they had pulled away from clothing and toys and stayed with their Kenmore appliance and tools they might have balanced better.

The few times we have been in Sears there has been absolutely nobody on the floor to help out; only one person each at check out stations.

I think people would still like to shop in person at stores; I know I would; but the pickings are getting slimmer and slimmer.

Empty malls are being rented to fitness gyms, some food markets, AMC theaters, discount clothing outfits and off-the-wall clothing start ups.

This has been a long time coming. Eddie Lampert certainly sucked the life out of every last bit of the company that he can, and now he's providing post-petition financing thru one of his other ventures. If there's a way he can make a buck off the corpse, he'll do it.

The only reason that I ever go in to my local Sears store is to shop in the Lands End shop. When Lands End was spun off on it's own in 2014, they continued to lease space for the shop in the store. The section manager told me it was less expensive than opening their own shop elsewhere in the mall. I'd hate to see my local store close, if only for that reason.

We were just talking about Sears last night. DH thought they would soon be filing.

I can't remember the last time we were at a mall-several years. This is all so sad.

I heard about this on my local morning news, Sears is a big part of my history and it just saddens me. Little by little pieces of my past, my history are disappearing. I feel for the employees.

@Bird mamaThat is always the hardest part. I know the Sears we pop into once in a blue moon there is nobody around to help except for cashiers. Even in the household department including the large appliances nobody is there.

Sears must have cut personnel to the bone. Clothing and toys are one thing; but if looking for a washing machine you want somebody explaining the features. Those big ticket items are something that are not easily ordered online, either.

It's very sad and a sign of the times.

My mom and I use to go shopping at the mall during my teen years and into my 20's. During my teens, kids use to hang out at the mall a lot too. Do kids hang out at the mall anymore?

I can't remember the last time I shopped at a mall.

End of an era.... sad really. I have bought many appliances from Sears... I heard someone else will buy out that portion of their business so the Kenmore line will continue. Everything I have purchased Kenmore appliance has been excellent. My washer and dry I have right now that are 12 years old work fabulously.

Our first purchase on credit when no one would give us a credit card when we were first married in 1981, was Sears... we bought a microwave oven and a TV on credit. That is how we started our credit history when we had very little money..... Sears gave us a chance. I will always have a place in my heart for Sears.

It's probably the beginning of the end. But we have been reading about the death of Sears for years now. There's only one left in a mall near me and Sears is a sad and empty place. People walk through it when they park on that side of the mall but you never see anyone buying anything. You don't see any sales staff either. It's a ghost town.

Some of you may remember (way back in the day) when Sears had "Thrifty Monday" sales. Every Monday evening, the whole family would load up in the station wagon to shop at Sears. I also went to Charm School at Sears. The classes were held for a number of weeks on Saturday mornings. We were given a looseleaf notebook filled with all of the things every young girl should know about proper posture, fashion, hygiene, manners, etc. I don't know if there is such a thing as charm school for girls these days. Those were the days...

Wow, that sure brought back a memory that I had not thought about in forever.

I remember that they took a picture of you before the course and one after to see the amazing changes that had taken place. My mother sent me so that I could learn how to act like a proper lady.

Thankfully, it did not work and I was able to have so many fun adventures!

Beisdes being a major investor in Sears, Eddie Lampert is Sears' major (or largest?) creditor. As such, he may end up owning most or all of Sears when it emerges from Chapter 11. And that may be exactly what he intended. Is he crazy like a fox?
