Not a World Problem, But . . .

When you go shopping and buy a 5 lb. bag of sugar, it's 5 lbs.

When you go shopping and buy a 5 lb. sack of flour, it's 5 lbs.

When you go shopping and buy a size 6 ring, it's a size 6.

When you go shopping and buy a size 10 dress it can fit anywhere from a size 6 to a size 14. Why is it that ALL manufacturers can't standardize sizes and a size 10 is ALWAYS a size 10?

I loathe clothes shopping. And worse yet, I hate trying clothes on. Forget shopping on-line. You have to get out the measuring tape and see how in between sizes (and out of shape you apparently are) to shop various manufacturers and their own size charts. So I figure it out to the best of my ability, order an item (to the closest of my out of shape measurements), receive said item, stand in front of the mirror, and don't know if I should laugh or cry, and then send said item back.

Don't even get me started on Chicos and that whole silly 0-4 sizing thing.

Any of my sisters out there with me?

Since my body has changed in the last couple of years, things dont fit me like before. Therefore I try on most things before buying.

I totally agree.

I understand that different styles will fit differently. That makes sense.

But, sizes do not need to be so all over the place.

And, shoes. Why isn't a size 8 a size 8? Don't tell me that they run small or run large. If they run small they are a size 7! Just put a 7 on them.

And, my sister in law needed a belt. She was a size 10/12. An extra large women's belt was too small! That is BS.

I dress simply, but I am fat. Luckily I know my size on QVC & if I pick the right style I can choose pretty well.

I pay more than in a store. I have to pay to ship it & return it, if necessary. But, I don't have to go & try on clothes.

I hate clothes shopping and always have.

I buy a lot at one time and then don't shop for years at a time.

I never buy clothing or shoes online, and don't understand how anyone does. I need to try things on.

Did I mention I hate clothes shopping?

Maybe it’s because some clothing manufacturers use vanity sizing. So each designer has their own sizing system. 😡

I order all my tops from Chicos; so much better quality and half the price of QVC when they have a sale.....can return to the local store if I want. I like the sizing there.

@handygal2, exactly. I think @Kalli hit the nail on the head with "vanity" sizing. Hence, Chicos size 000-4, as ridiculous as that is.

each number in the Chicos sizing correlates to a size range; very simple to figure out; not sure why anyone would think it is ridiculous. Vanity sizing is when a brand runs so big that the customer needs a smaller size. It is how Liz Claiborne became a leading brand.

@lovesrecess, I just don't understand why the need to change "standard" sizing (although when it comes to women's clothes sizes are all over the place). I understand that many clothing lines feel that if my 10-12 body can wear a 6-8 I'm supposed to feel better. For me, not so much. I just want to know that a 10 is a 10 is a 10.

I have a very good friend who is a big gal and a gorgeous, successful woman. She's a solid 16. She's a professional woman and suits are required attire for her. She insists on squeezing into a 12. We went shopping one day, she put on a beautiful size 12 suit and said, "what do you think?" The buttons on the jacket were straining to the point her bra was showing and the zipper on the pants just wasn't getting it. I said to her, "hang on, take off the suit, I'll be right back." I brought the same one back to her in the size 16 she needed, said "put it on, don't look at the size tag." She came out and looked like a million bucks! I told her, "you're not a skinny minnie, you never were, never will be and you're beautiful just like you are. Your husband adores you and your curvy womanly body and you need to dress your size and not what in your head you want to be. Buy the suit and the compliments you get will be awesome!" Turns out everyone told her how fabulous she looked. She now buys her true size, and knows what's on the label is not what matters. The fit is. We shouldn't have to be "tricked" into sizes we're not. Let's just be like men and buy based on actual facts (neck/sleeve size; waist/length) and not buy into a fantasy. That's my entire point. (Oh, and btw, my beautiful size 16 friend and I are still friends!) LuLu

I had to chuckle reading OP's post. It's so true.

I know my sizes at Lands End, LLBean, and a few other brands. Anywhere else is like a bad lottery....who knows how it'll fit and and I lose by having to return items.

Fyi, in my area, a 5 pound bag of sugar is now 4 pounds.

I tried on a few things yesterday because I had time to kill. I hate trying on clothes...The sizing was all over the place.... I wish there were brands that cater to different problems like large breasts, small hips, or large hip etc. My biggest peave is longer tops that do not flare out a little at the bottom...It will fit nicely at the top and be stretched across the bottom or stomach. Also hate tops that are see through and you have to wear something under it or you have to wear something under it because it is too low cut. I don't even try on V neck tops anymore.

I totally relate to this problem. The Q's tops run big, but not as much as Zulily. I buy quite a bit from Z and the size Small is like a tent. Am normally a Medium.

Not really. I was looking for a pair of jeans at Duluth Trading Company. According to their size chart I would take a size 16. No way am I a size 16 in any brand. I ordered a size 12 and they fit perfectly. Yet in Chicos where I bought another pair of jeans I was a 0.5 in their boyfriend jeans. Go figure. I don’t remember what 0.5 translates to in their charts.

And QVC clothing lines are the WORST offenders!!!! And it even varies from garment within the same line. You don't know whether to get your regular size, OR size up or size down....You can't trust those "click here" measurements either they aren't always accurate. Or they are missing entirely.....

One time for a top (my size) medium measurements on the screen were larger than size Large...say what??? I even messaged the designer and he gave me some gobbledegook

BUT I find certain lines at Dillards and Macys (and Im talking about their cheaper lines are CONSISTENT---Westbound, Karen Scott, JM Collection, Investments, Jones of NY, and Jones of NY Sport, Ruby Rd) $15-$39...I have NO PROBLEMS with sizing!!!..I can order online without trying on and no returns needed.

And pants--- I buy a certain brand and my friends say, arent you going to try them on--- NOPE...sizing is consistent and I get them home--PERFECT FIT!!!!

Even Walmart's White Stag and Rider jeans lines are consistent!!!

Now JPC, Kohls--- sizing does vary

YOU ARE RIGHT---Its all about the designers and manufacturers quality

P.S. I HATE Chicos---my sister loves them so I sometimes am stuck going into one---between their odd sizing, high pressured sales people, and HIGH prices---NOPE!!!
