PRINCESS DIANA WOULD HAVE LIVED

According to well known Forensic Pathologist Dr. Richard Shepherd, who performed a second autopsy on Princess Diana, he declared she would have been at the weddings of William and Harry if she had worn a seat belt.

He also claimed she would have ended up with a black eye or a broken arm when the accident occurred had she been wearing a seat belt. Because she was not strapped in, she was thrown forward with a force the body is unable to endure.

How terribly sad that not doing a simple thing like putting on a seat belt caused the death of a beautiful soul who had so much to offer her children, their children and mankind. Twenty years after her death she is still remembered and missed. She made a strong impact wherever she went and whomever she touched. She will forever be remembered.

@Lindsays Grandma - This was interesting. I've read a lot about the accident, and I think I remember the first responders saying she looked like she was fine on the outside. All of her injuries were internal. Like you said, it is sad.

I believe the autopsy said she died of a ruptured aorta caused by being thrown forward so violently. Yes, the seatbelt could have prevented that.

Yes, a seat belt would have kept her from having the major injuries she had but a driver that was drunk didn't do her or anyone else in the car any good either. There are two lessons from that accident to be learned. If any of the people that were snapping photos of the accident had realized that she needed help and gotten help for her right away the outcome may have been different, too. They were more interested in getting their photo than they were in getting the injured to the hospital.

Well, since we knew all along that out of the four people in the car, the only survivor was the bodyguard in the front seat. And...he was wearing his seatbelt. This news isn't new.

My husband rarely wears a seatbelt. When we are on a major highway, I say to him 'remember Princess Diana' the only survivor had on his seatbelt he will put it on.

Wasnt the transport reason that France tries to get a person stabilized before going to the hospital? Don't understand that.

My smart car will not start without the seat belt on. And if anyone is in the back seat my dashboard goes crazy.

How tragic her death was that it could have been prevented. Her life with the royal family was no bed of roses either.

Wonder if Diana ever wore a seat belt. Wish she had.

There was an accident right in front of my husband's company. An SUV hit a lady on a motorcycle. She was sent flying. My husband's car parked in the parking lot stopped her. He of course called the EMT's and tried to assist her but did not want to touch her and make things worse.

They noticed her chest was blowing up. As soon as the EMT's got there, they knew that she had a ripped aorta. They treated her as they were taking her to the hospital.

She survived. They even said that my husband's car helped to save her life too. They said if she hadn't hit his car she would have tumbled on the gravel parking lot for another 100 yards.

I often wondered if our local EMT's were able to treat and save the motorcycle lady. She not only had a ripped aorta but she was also hit twice, once by the SUV and then when she hit my husband's car. She was sent flying and Diana was still contained in the car. Why weren't the Paris EMT's able to help Diana more.

PS - I was sitting at work. My husband called and said "you are going to have to pick me up. I think my car is going to be impounded by the police." I am sitting there not knowing what to think. And my husband in rattling on about maybe charged with manslaughter, I am not understanding what he is telling me. I am thinking my husband did the manslaughter. And I had no words. But as he talked more, I realized it was his car, that was parked in the parking lot.

My friends think I’m a fanatic, but our car doesn’t go anywhere until everyone’s buckled up. Years ago, when my sister was a tween, she was in the back seat of a car that had a head-on collision at less than 20 mph. She hit the windshield and needed a few stitches, but it would have been much worse if the adult driver hadn’t braced the split front seat with his arm just before the crash. I don’t know if they even had seat belts in the back seats then, but it would’ve saved her a trip to the emergency room if they did.

My outlook: Diana would have never been in that Mercedes if Charles would have behaved himself. When I see Charles and Camilla in photos, I can't even say what I am thinking.

Hearing she would have lived if she was wearing a seatbelt offers more grief for the family. If it were my loved one, I would rather not know. It only leaves you with what ifs, the person is still gone and you are still missing them.

It was not meant to be. No sense in rehashing what should of, could of beens 20 some years later. She is gone. That is just the fact. She never should have gotten into that car... They never should have let the drunk guy drive.... Bla bla bla.....

Yes! It wasn't just the lack of a seatbelt ....... it was that they stayed at the scene for over an hour before taking her to the hospital. If they had immediately gotten her out of the wreckage and took off, she would have had a chance. How can they ever "stabilize" someone if they don't know the extent of the injuries? IMO, that makes no sense and is a very bad policy.

In the U.S., paramedics use what's often referred to as the "scoop and run" procedure, and also alert the ER en route what's coming at them, so badly hurt people are actually met at the drop-off. Diana may not have "looked" seriously injured, but she was dying of internal bleeding.

She always wore a seat belt, according to what I've read. Her friends said she was adamant about it.

There are theories that the seatbelts in the back seat were tampered with, and the "catch" filed down so it wouldn't hold.

It also took way too long to get her to hospital, which is supposedly the custom in France but it makes no sense in this particular situation.

Had she been RUSHED into surgery she would've had a chance.....no excuse for what happened to her and the delay in treatment, I don't care what their protocol was.

What I still feel what would have prevented her death would be if the paparazzi weren't chasing her. I've blamed them from the very start.

Yes, this tragedy could have been prevented by wearing a seat belt and other reasons. Diana could have witnessed her children's marriages and played with her beautiful grandchildren. But that isn't how life works. So many tragically die young, diseases still need cures, and we always question these things and ask why.

My late best friend always used to say when your candle goes out, it goes out, basically you cannot control when that time comes. I always disagreed and felt we could do certain things to live long lives. But who is right, I don't know. I do have strong faith but admit sometimes I question why people so young are taken. Diana like so many others from all walks of life, rich and poor, good and decent, all leave us much to soon.

I recently read that the use of seatbelts is at a 20 yr low.

Most people under the age of 30 do NOT wear seatbelts?!?!?!?

I can not move my car 8 feet without putting on my seatbelt, it is such a force of habit.

The theory in the article was that youger parents are not teaching their children this skill. Seatbelts save lives.

@ID2 IMO it wasn't the paps as much as her hostility towards the paps....she did a lot of strange things to "one-up" them....she despised them....had they simply driven at a reasonable speed,what would have happened? They would have gotten photos of them. That's all.

It was the Mercedes' insane speed and recklessness that contributed to the danger, it was absurd...

I can understand her not wanting to be photographed but she was a Princess, how many millions watched her wedding? You can't become a Princess and expect to live a private life, that's the reality, but she refused to accept that and she paid with her life. She even refused the royal family bodyguards at the end of her life.....had she allowed them to be with her when needed, she and the other occupants of the car would never have been traveling at such a reckless speed, it all plays a a part....read "Dicing with Di" for a clearer understanding of her relationship with the press.

The history of the world and every individual in it is fraught with decision trees and choice points. Some things that happen are pure chance and some are based on choices made, either by us or others. As much as we all sometime like to play 'what if', it doesn't change anything. Ultimately, it's wasted energy.
