too funny

i neded new brakes on my car. so i went to a local garage and asked them to check it ut. the kid who took my car could not get the key to work. so i asked him why. he had n clue. turns out he was using the trunk to to try and start the car.

it gets better. he then tried to get the hub cap off. my car has a key to lock the hubcap in place and he had no clue that he needed to use the key to get the hubcap off. i then just asked im for my cars and said i was going somewhere else. he asked me why and i told him that i did not want him working on my car. really, if he did nt know a trunk key from aengine key and had no idea on how to get the hubcap off, but else doesn't know? i was not abut to find out.

this is why i go to my toyota dealership locally. they always have mechanics who know the cars

It just goes to show you that some people today just can't be honest. I don't know if they think it reflects on their expertise if they question you about the car or what. I would have walked out of a situation like that too. Our local mechanic works on all models of cars, trucks and motor cycles and does a fine job.

I don't know that I've ever had a car that had a separate key for the trunk. I guess I wouldn't have known that either.

@shortbreadlover Having an employee that isn't aware falls on bad management. He should have been trained or at the very least, know to ask other more experienced employees for assistance.

I applaud his efforts to try to help you, but his lack of knowledge on working on those areas of a car is poor training. I feel sorry for him, it must be terribly frustrating and embarrassing to try to help customers and then have the customers leave because you don't know what you are doing.

I probably would have done the same thing and left, but the management there needs to do their job.

Trunk Key - - would you mind telling us the make and year of your car? I don't think I ever had one of those; but how did (our parents) open the trunk? I must have been too little to have owned a car or a key.

@sidsmom What I got out of that post was, the mechanic did not know how to start the vehicle or get the hub cap off the car, etc. How hard would it be just to ask the customer instead of bull sh---ing your way through. If he was not familiar with that model car, he should have been honest with the customer.

Older cars have a separate key for the trunk. They don't make it like that anymore. Not for long, long, long time. Maybe that's why the young man was confused. Not his fault. I've heard of wheel locks, I have them on my car. Never heard of hubcaps locks. Now days not too many cars have hubcaps. This has nothing about to with checking brakes. If it's an American car, they just slap a NAPA part on.

‘Dishonest’ usually means a ruse of some sort.

Not knowing is much, much different than being dishonest.

In fact, being dishonest is knowing something for gain.

There was nothing to gain by the mechanic openly saying he didn’t know.

I also only go to my car dealership. They always do a nice job.... local garages hire ..well... who knows who.

@blackhole99- Gist of it is that some older cars came with two separate keys. One for the engine and one for the trunk. I believe hubcaps locks are after market. Not every car has them or hubcaps. The OP could have said this engine and this is key to the hubcaps. I don't think the mechanic was trying to get over on the OP. Someone asked the year of the car and the OP hasn't responded.

May I ask what make and year your car is? I'm pretty old and I don't remember ever having a car with a separate trunk key. But maybe it's just my memory that's bad. To be honest, I haven't had a car with an actual key in well over 10 years.

My car only has an engine key. Everything else works with a button on the door and on the fob.
