If I were dating now, I think I would only go Dutch ,and opt for places, that you could eat for about $25 for 1 person

I feel so sorry for these ladies. I wonder if this happens more than we suspect?

Never happened to me...my last long term relationship over five years ago.

Not into dating...that's just me. Do enjoy dining with family and friends.

Well, it never happened to me either. But, I have been married for 54 years, and men were better behaved back them. ( at least the ones I knew were)

I'm the mother of three girls and since they were teenagers, I taught them to always have their own money to cover their meals. Especially when some guys expect to be rewarded after dinner when they payed for it.

I don't know how that would be extortion. That's a stretch. I don't see how it's a crime against the woman at all. Rude, tacky, mean even a lit bit nuts but not a crime. If the woman just pays for her own meal, as any woman should on the first or second date, it would be a crime against the restaurant. Every woman should know enough to split the bill with a man she doesn't know. Meet the the guy at the restaurant and go dutch. What woman doesn't know that?

Indeed!! I taught my girls that, my mom taught me that and I've been married for 35 years! Of course, women do this so they won't be put in that "you owe me" position.

There have always been shady Characters. I can recall an auntie of mine ,telling about one of her aunts, that married someone ,the family thought was a confidence man

They gave her a $50 gold piece when she went on her honeymoon, and it was inside a tiny mesh bag, she was instructed to wear on the inside of her clothing. They warned her not to tell the guy she married she had it

I don't remember how it all ended, but she(auntie) had the tiny silver bag in her belongings ,and donated it to our local museum.

I always insisted on separate checks. When my dates objected, I just told them that while I appreciated the gesture of them paying, I prefer to pay my own way.

Going on dates should be split by the couple IMO. Get separate checks. Unless once person is generous, and is happy to pay all of it (no matter how large it will be). Don't go to expensive places for a while. Pubic places first. Paying separately, makes one not obligated for future things.

I never went anywhere with anyone without have extra money on me. I think this has been going on since the history of dating began. This is not something new as some posters seem to believe. Just another form of crime that has always been with us.

Way back when.....many moons ago.....when I started dating was always with another couple....never alone. We did things like bowling or a movie, then maybe a place like Steak N Shake where you could order and have it delivered to the car by a car hop. All of my dates paid for it. And they never expected to be paid back....

Times have really changed.....and I'm glad I have no part in that today.

It goes both ways.

I have worked with women who go out on dates for the sole purpose of wanted to be treated to a nice dinner out. The one wing nut actually talked about picking out losers who she believed would be thankful to be 'graced with her company' and she would also select $$$ restaurants. (I could not stand her-she was the loser)

There have been cases where men who thought they were being taken advantage of sue the women for half of the checks.

It is one thing to be a leech, but something far different ,to run out on paying after you have consumed 2 dinners, and you invited a person to be your date. This creep did this a bunch of times...

This guy is a crook, there's not much you can do when you are dealing with a pro. This kind of thing could happen to anyone who dates online or even with someone you met at a bar. I understand there are many who find dates online, that's just the way it's done now. My niece who didn't marry until she was in her thirties told me if you don't meet someone in high school or college, it's very hard to meet people who want a serious relationship. My niece actually met her husband through a guy she was dating who was not serious about her.

On a slightly different note, on the first date with my husband of 51 years:

we we worked together at the same computer center and as we were walking to this little Italian restaurant, he asked me if I had any money with me. For a moment, I couldn’t think of what would come next.

Here, he had lent money to his roommate who was traveling home that weekend and had left before DH got back to the apartment. He had enough to cover dinner and a drink later at a bar with dancing.

He is is the most generous person I know with his time, talent and treasure !

I agree about each person getting his/her own check right up front. I guess we are still stuck back in the day when men paid because they initiated the date. These people are meeting on the internet; it's different. They don't even know each other.

I think years ago men paid ,because women didn't have much money. As a rule men always made a lot more than ladies....they still do in some areas
