The quiet tropics are churning up -

Tropical storm Gordon is in the Gulf, and hurricane Florence is headed for the carolinas perhaps - still too far out to know. Happy September. Certainly nothing in comparison to last year at this time.

Some folks along the Texas coast are still in the process of getting their homes and businesses repaired from last years hurricane....I hope they dont get hit with more bad weather...

@KentuckyWoman- Hurricane season starts on 6/1 but really ramps up from mid August through October 31. The last few years, the storms came in September & October.

Some areas still have not been able to repair their homes/businesses from Hurricane Matthew and that was maybe 2 yrs ago

and here and there on Long Island (and I assume NJ and NYC) there's still Superstorm Sandy recovery going on. And Katrina and Maria and and and!

So many different areas across the country suffer such extreme damage from storms, from tornadoes, from wildfires, etc. that I'm really not surprised when these massive rebuildings take years. I understand our impatience because the displacement and emotional loss is as extreme as the damage - I just don't know how to get everything done.

If a home is already damaged from a hurricane and in the processes of being repaired and then a STORM comes along with heavy rains and flooding, thats not going to help those people who have holes in their roofs which are still in the midst of being repaired!!!!!!. Hope this clairifies my point........... A storm on top of hurricane damage doesnt help

@Spurt Agree and Houston was hit in 2008, too.

All the major areas-Sandy, Harvey, Katrina-etc. leave such devastation especially for low-moderate income families.

I'm sure all the good people in any of those areas brace when they hear of a new system forming-be it tropical or hurricane strength.

I don't pretend that rain coming down 'in buckets' begins to be comparable to the severity of a hurricane, but we sure are getting more than our share of rain here in Wisconsin. Fortunately, our home has not been hit by flood damage (yet).

We will keep an eye on Florence and should the need arise, we will put up our hurricane shutters. It really depends on the direction it takes. If it is a really bad hurricane, we will be gone along with our dog and parrot.

It's not particularly relevant what Gordon is right now, out over the water, but what its strength is expected to be at landfall. Gordon is predicted to make landfall as a strong tropical storm or a CAT 1 hurricane. The Mississippi/Alabama Gulf Coast is under a Hurricane Watch, not a Tropical Storm Watch. Forecasters always say that it is much easier to predict a storm's path rather than its strength. So we always have to prepare for the strongest possibility.

The problem with the SW coast of Florida right now is we have been getting daily torrential downpours so not much rain will be needed to start causing flooding.

They are saying it may become a cat 1 hurricane before it reaches landfall. I am sitting here right now and it is right over us. Rain & wind howling but nothing too bad.

Harvey's wrath from last year is still quite evident in parts of Houston. Galveston is sandbagging in anticipation on 10-12 inches. The latest disturbance in the Gulf has brought some badly needed rain today for us in north Texas so we are grateful....it looks like the storm will be a cat 1 when it hits Gulf Shores and then will weaken; let's hope the weather men are accurate.

As I said it was here yesterday late afternoon & early evening. Wasn't really much at all.More wind than rain for us.It did a pretty good job of ruining our friends labor day pool party but was otherwise not very notable.It brought down a lot of palm fronds that were hanging.

We were also grateful in SouthTexas for the much needed rain last night with more promised all week............ ☂️

My friends mom lives in one of the small coastal Texas towns....and repairs are going slowly. She is just glad her home was still standing and could be repaired, others werent so lucky...........

My heart goes out to all in the path of this tropical storm or hurricane or whatever it is. Prayers for safety for all (humans and critters great and small) and no damage to homes and businesses.....
