Turns out news is now reporting that Rivera did, in fact, steal an identity to work. He had a forged ID wih someone else's social security number.

Fake documents are big business because it's against the law to hire illegals.

If you don't have legitimate documents & you want to work, you get fake documents.

Every job I've ever worked at, I had to prove my identity & legal authorization to work.

Probably everyone working at Yarrabee Farms have fake documents.

Yes, sadly laws don't seem to matter much anymore. And those who end up victims - of identity theft - or worse - are apparently now regarded as just collateral damage.

I thought the news also said that the employer didn't use E-Verify either. I half heard as I was in another room this morning but is the employer in hot water as well?

Not sure you need e-verify if someone has a social security number - as that IS the authorization to work. However, when it's stolen.....

@Lipstickdiva I don't believe that is the story-the employer did verify the SS number and of course if it's stolen it's still a valid SS number.

So even if one is using another identity, the SS number is still valid and would not raise any red flags.

The only way to spot a fake number is by the first 3 digits-no "000" or "9" as the first number and there is also no certain numbers for the 2nd and 3rd position.

We have laws but many aren’t fully enforced it seems.My DH has been rear ended twice by people driving without a license.They just receive a ticket but are allowed to drive their vehicle away...huh?We have to pay uninsured motorist so we are essentially buying insurance for people who don’t follow the law.

I have been trying to find information and the article I found quoted the manager of the farm as saying the employer used the Social Security Administration's employment verification system, not E-Verify.

However, employers with federal contracts or subcontracts that contain the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) E-Verify clause are required to enroll in E-Verify as a condition of federal contracting. Employers may also be required to participate in E-Verify if their states have legislation mandating the use of E-Verify, such as a condition of business licensing. Finally, in some instances employers may be required to participate in E-Verify as a result of a legal ruling.

So unless the employer had any conditions placed on him or really didn't call SS, he did nothing wrong.

If he really didn't verify that SS#, he should face severe penalties.

You must show a document which proves your identity (with photo) and a document which proves your right to work in this country. Examples are social security card and a photo ID issued by a government agency, a Passport does both. Native American ID with photo, US military photo ID, Green card + regulated photo ID.or a few more.

Using E ID will tell you to whom the SS number is really issued, and to whom the license is issued.

I'm not saying the employer did anything wrong however, the news I heard this morning said that the Social Sec. Adm. employment verification is not as up to date as E-Verify, although that probably wouldn't have made any difference.

As an aside, over the last month or so there have been major busts on a couple of businesses in my area by immigration.

I'm not fighting over this issue. I actually don't care unless the employer violated any law/regulation.

There is no defense to this murder, be it stolen identity, DACA, whatever. His lawyer had already said he was not undocumented and that turned out not to be true.

There is another storm coming over this and Mollie will be used as a poster child.

I agree. I am getting more and more tired of innocent people bearing the brunt of harm caused by lawbreakers - whose actions are essentially excused.

I agree. I only posted this because someone said yesterday that it was very uncommon for undocumented workers to steal identity. I don't believe it is.

To move on, as he was jogging alongside Mollie, Rivera claimed he got scared when she threatened to call police, blanked out and "came to" when he saw Mollie's body in his car and then dumped her in the field. His story makes no sense and I just can't understand any defense attorney defending him.

This man is a hideous murderer.

I would however like to see a chart of how many murders are committed by citizens as opposed to illegals. Every weekend the news talks about tens of people killed even in one city. I have been known to be very wrong, but it seems that we citizens do a pretty good job of commiting crimes.

     And Rivera led the police to the body in the field!! I have several friends who are defense attorneys. I have never understood how anyone can defend someone who has so obviously done the deed.
     I know everyone is thought to be innocent until proven otherwise, but here the man confessed. Am sure they will try to make a defense based on 'did not know what he was doing because he is sick and blacked out'.
     So sad!!!

Like it or not, even the most horrible criminals are entitled to a fair trial. Somebody will have to defend him. It is so brutal for the family to endure. Such a beautiful young woman taken so violently.

Also, not a political statement, but a statement of fact. Illegal immigrants are widely employed in this country. They do work most Americans do not want to do. Who do you think picks our crops, cleans our large buildings and hotels, work in restaurant kitchens, etc., etc.? And sometimes employers hire them because they are desperate for help and other times because they can underpay them, It happens everywhere. How many Americans aspire to these jobs? Not saying it is right, but a reality.

Again, let's not turn this into a political whirling dervish, but recently Weslyan University gave a special award to a janitor there, who has been here many years and undocumented. I do know he has been here many years, but do not know any more than that. His award was given for all the tutoring help he has freely given to college students there. Seems he was a college professor before he came here and yet is happy to be here and work as a janitor.

Now I do not want to demean anyone who works in any job. People who are honest and hard-working command my respect. I am only saying there are jobs that are unskilled and low paying that most Americans do not want to do. The solution? I don"t have one.

The logic comparing crimes committed by illegal immigrants and citizens is faulty.

That is like saying - hey people without insurance commit fewer accidents than those with it as a percentage so not having insurance really isn't a problem at all.

Or family members commit crimes - as a percentage - more frequently than strangers so there is really no reason to lock your doors because the odds are in your favor that an univited stranger won't kill you.

Mollie was a bright,beautiful, talented young woman, who should have lived a long, rich, full,life, dying, at maybe 90, leaving a family heartbroken, but, so grateful, for the time they had.

It wasnt to be😢

A monster took her life. Whether the monster shouldn’t have been here, or whether he shared her bed, it’s a tragedy, that we never really understand. Please, don’t let it become political fodder!

RIP Mollie and God Bless her family and friends, as they struggle to find comfort and some kind of peace.
