WELL-KNOWN NYU PROFESSOR ACCUSED BY HER FORMER GRAD STUDENT

There's an interesting account in the New York Times about a professor, very renowned in her field, who has been accused of harrassment by her male grad student. The details of what was allegedly done, and the emails that he produced that she wrote him, are baffling. Insanity. And many of her colleagues are rallying to her.

According to the piece, she claims that there was a quirky relationship that they had, based on certain commonalities in their backgrounds. But does she not realize that this was not a voluntary social relationship? It never fails to astonish, the appalling lack of boundaries, good sense, respect for the sensibilities of others, and just plain lack of professionalism that a supposedly intelligent individual can exhibit. Misuse of authority in the sensitive teacher-student relationship can never be justified.

Can't post the article due to opinionated sidebars, but it is titled something like "What Happens to #MeToo When a Feminist is Accused".

Will it ever stop! After awhile nobody will believe anybody and or nobody will even pay attention. By now I just stay away from news and spend my time doing other things.

What struck me most, apart from the bizarre nature of the circumstances, is that apparently she has colleagues, who also count themselves as feminists, who seem to be disposed to giving her a pass, and condemning the student, because of who she is. It's a double standard that is ironic and disturbing.

It’s not bizarre.

It’s not ironic.

Gender doesn’t matter.

And sexual orientation doesn’t matter.

If someone does something inappropriate, they must pay

for their actions. There have been male #MeToo situations.

I DO agree it’s disturbing.

Any time someone is made uncomfortable with inappropriate

actions, something needs to be done to make it stop.

It takes courage for the accused to tell their story.

I guess by now I shouldn’t be surprised by anything, but it still astounds me how little common sense people display even when they know the consequences. Self control and professionalism seem to be in short supply.

This behavior has been been going on as long as humans have been around. My dear aunts experienced sexual assault, one as a child from her elementary principal and the other from her boss as a young secretary. They both told me when they were in their eighties and it was the first time that they revealed it to anyone. I was honored that they trusted me.

You're right, @Ruby Laine, the discussion in the New York Times article made the point that the situation was "roiling" (I think that was one of the descriptions they used) or dividing, some people who identify as feminists, who would normally be rallying to the alleged victim, but instead were supporting the professor against the student.

There were many things mentioned in the article that were not mentioned in the original post. The college found that she did sexually harass the former grad student who has filed a multi-million law suit against the college. Her colleagues supported her in the same way that many people support colleagues, family & friends accused of similar crimes. I have a co-worker who refers to me as a liberal feminist because she thinks it will offend me. There are many people who have never looked up the meaning of the word! LOL

I think the mistakes here are twofold: stereotyping and also presenting only part of a story. I'm kind of tired of the way the feminist labeling tries to put people in one box, as if they all are robots or clones. Feminists come in all shapes, sizes, and attitudes. In this situation, people who are the woman's friends and colleagues and who also identify as feminists wanted to support her. This happens, right or wrong, and as a human being I can understand how the first reaction is to be there for a friend... someone with whom I have an important history. It's the human heart... and sometimes we have to step back and try to be more objective, but we don't always do that at first, or well. The human heart is powerful.

I think the story is another example of the attempt to divide. To draw a line in the sand and prompt people to take sides. If we really want to put a stop to all the divisiveness in society and in this country in particular, we need to take a close look at this type of story that can perpetuate conflict, division, and that reduces people to often-poorly-defined one-dimensional labels.
