Nostalgia post back to school memories

Seeing the kids go back to school makes me remember what it was like for me. We started back half days on the Thursday and Friday before Labor Day. The Tuesday after Labor Day was our first full day.

I always got 5 new dresses from Robert Hall (anyone remember that store?), new underwear, new socks and new shoes. One pair of school shoes and one pair of Keds.

School supplies were always such fun, new erasers, new pencils and crayons. And a pack of 3 hole paper. Those old paper folders, one color for each subject.

I lived closed enough to the school that I walked home for lunch every day unless it was too cold. Then we had permission to eat lunch at school. Milk tickets were 3 cents!

In the fall, the field by the school was full of stickers, so every day, we had to pull those things out of our socks!

No AC in the school, but we never noticed. One morning, one lunch, and one afternoon recess. We had all the playground equipment like monkey bars, merry-go-rounds, swings, and teeter-totters.

For Halloween, we dressed up and then did a parade through all the classrooms.

Good memories from small town Midwest. What are your memories?

oh my gosh you are bring back many memories for me.

was in grade school from early 50's to mid 60's (graduate from high school).

my parents paid a stipend to the school (catholic grade) for meals/milk. each week the child had to bring in money for stipend. One time I lost the money. my parents , you don't even want to know what they did to me for that big boo-boo. back then $ 1.75 was a whole lot of money so you hung onto that money with your life.

I do remember Robert Hall store. We got 1 pair of school shoes ( usually junky loafers) and 1 pair of sneakers for gym class. we had to wear while ankle socks, we did not have uniforms in grade school but we did have to wear uniforms in high school.

we got all our school supplies at Kressegs, or woolworth's. binders and folders and pens and paper wide lined rules and notebooks in older grade/high school.

I live close enough to both schools i walked too and from school daily. we could not go home for lunch during grade and high school. we got to school about 730am and stayed till 3pm or so. high school was 7am to 4pm even went to school on saturday during freshman year at high school, the school was so overwhelmed with students there wasn't enough room for all the students we freshman were chosen to do school 6 days a week.

Exactly the same as yours, @dragonflyveb! The grade school I attended was the same one my mother did and also my daughter.

They used to flood the ball field behind the school to make a great ice skating rink. We were able to walk from our home and skate for hours. They had a warming house.

AHHH memories. We weren't afraid, even though I am sure that bad things happened. Simpler times for sure.

I did very well in school but hated every minute of it. The only thing I liked was getting new school supplies. I have two very strong memories about back to school time. The first was the TV Guide Fall Preview Edition. When that arrived I knew the party was almost over. The second was the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Always over Labor Day weekend and we went back to school the following day. That was like a shot to my heart! LOL!! Even now -- in my 60's -- when this time of year rolls around -- I am still thankful not to be going back to school!

I do not have one fond memory of elementary school ( and I was a straight A student, for the most part.) This was in the 60s, when the teachers were allowed to be mean. Being a sensitive kid, school caused me a lot of anxiety.

I'm one of those people who would never want to go back to being a kid. I often hear others say things like, "Oh, to be a kid again!!", and think to myself, No Way!!!

I so agree @judy0330. Didn’t like taking classes like math and science...grades reflected that. Kept saying, “When will I ever need to know this stuff”?

Oh those Back to School Robert Hall commercials filled me with dread. Summer had just gotten started!! And suddenly School Bells are Ringing! Mother would drag us to Robert Hall, Grant's and another store, Billy Blake. We got shoes and PF Flyers (sneaks). We got dresses for school. Jumpers were popular. White anklets and white Buster Brown underwear !

I think the last year I was decked out in new duds was 9th grade. The following HS years wore jeans and tees the first day of school.

The first day of school was always HOT HAZY and HUMID. When school let out I never could find the right bus to get on. One time when I was about 7 the driver passed right by my street and I hysterically burst into tears. A few nice older girls reassured me he would loop back so I wouldnt have to cross the highway.

And we didnt have parents sitting in cars waiting for us at the bus stops. We got off and walked home . We played outside after school. Climbing trees, playing House and "Chinese Jump Rope" were our "activities".

Robert Hall yes that is where we bought our winter coats! And I lived in Brooklyn NY during the 50's-60's. It was a popular store there. I went to a Catholic school so we wore the same uniform 5 days each week, but I did have 5 blouses, 5 sets of socks and underwear and one pair of school shoes and aone pair of Keds. Same as you.

We had a store locally, but it has been closed for years.

i wore a uniform jumper to school, I was small and didn't grow much, so I got three to fours years use from two jumpers. Every year I got three new blouses to wear under the jumpers and a pair of new shoes...always leather laced shoes, new undies and socks.

We purchased the school supplies at school, so no shopping for that.

We had to pack our lunch and buy milk at school. 5 cents a day. I don't drink milk and never have. I would have to buy milk and throw it out...everyday for years. I learned to not have a drink with my meals. I still do not drink anything until I am done eating.

The first day of school was always the day after Labor Day.

My school had only four classrooms for grades 1-8. Each teacher ( nuns) taught two different grades at the same time in her classroom. We had about 30 students in each class room.

I didn't at the time, but I do now appreciate all the hard work those nuns did. They were work horses. They even did the janitorial work to keep the school running.

The order of Nuns who taught at my school were very kind and good,to,us. They were never mean, but we were made to listen and learn. No fooling around in the classroom.

I got good at math once a lady (masters from Purdue) came to teach our class. She was a great “communicator.” That is what I think!

Re: Robert Hall. I’ve never heard of it growing up down here. We had Belk’s and that was it. Just called hubby at his office (w/ client & not thrilled to be interrupted). He grew up in NY and yep, he bought his school clothes there, too. Turns out his client was from NJ and as he hung up, the 2 of them were reminiscing about Robert Hall. Lol

My big rebellion in school was my senior year when I wore a pair of red culottes, which were not the code, although the cheerleaders wore them. Got called to the principal's office and sent home to change. It was spring, just a couple weeks before graduation, so I took my sweet time going home. It was a good day.

The next year, the dress code was abolished! I figure I was ahead of my time.

The night before school started, my mother would say" hurry up and take a bath before all the water is gone"! I remember always wearing a new outfit on the first day of school, you wanted to make a good impression. After school we would take the list of school supplies and buy what we needed ( I always loved getting new supplies). I remember the night before the first day of school I couldn't sleep, I was nervous and worried I wouldn't be with any of my friends or not like my teacher. Usually everything worked out.

Because my Mom worked we would spend our summers at my Uncle's house in Florida. He was single but his housekeeper would care for us , and tske us school shopping before we went home.Labor day weekend we would go home , usually my Dad , who worked at the Air Force base, would cop a ride to florida to get us then bring us home. If he wasn't able to we would fly home commercial - unescorted minors.We did that enough times to not be afraid at all.We always came home with tons of stuff as my Uncle spoiled us terribly while we were with him, plus school clothes & shoes he would buy for us.
