POWER MAINTENANCE OUTAGE

We live in Eastern Ventura County in California and our electric company is So. Cal. Edison. Late last week we received a notice that Edison scheduled a maintenance power outage for 9:00 p.m. Tuesday 8/7 until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday 8/8. We have been having temps in the mid 90's with evenings in the mid to upper 70's. Starting today we are under an excessive heat warning and red flag alert because of hot, dry conditions. We are expected to have temps of well over 100 during the day and high 70's or higher at night. We will not have any electricity for 9 hours - no fans, AC, TV, computer - NADA. I think Edison is being irrespnsible and inconsiderate to schedule this during this heat wave. I was hoping they would re-think this and postpone it, but we just received a phone call reminder. What do you think?

Given the curcumstances you are lucky to have any power.Power grids can crash in weather like this.I'm sure it's uncomfortable.

awful - suggest you go to nearby hotel that has / will have power - preferably on the beach - and take an impromptu vacation for a night - walk on the beach, eat well and fall asleep with the sound of the waves lapping the sand. report back!

We get these unexpectedly often in Florida. Crank your AC as low as it can go, cover windows and use battery operated fan. Flameless candles will help. Put fridge and freezer on lowest setting and fill freezer with bags of water and containers (not to the top r they'll burst). It's one night, and you were given notice. You can do it.

@fluffysmom - If a power outage occurs because of excessive usage that is unavoidable. This heat wave was predicted over a week ago. To schedule a 9 hr. outage during a predicted excessive heat warning is not right.

@deepwaterdotter - We are a small city and only have a couple hotels. Their rates are over $100 pe night. Too expensive for our Sr. fixed income budget.

I have asthma. In a situation like this, I would be in big trouble as would anyone who needs electricity to operate any medical equipment, keep medications cooled, etc. I'm surprised your county doesn't have something in place for those who need relief from the heat/need power on.

In my situation, we would at the local hospital, Walmart, 24 hour grocery store, anyplace that offered cool air during the night (most likely the hospital).

Take a drive to the ocean. Go to a movie far enough away to have A/C. There are many things you can do. I would just be happy they notified me ahead of time so I could make plans.

I think this is terrible and extremely irresponsible. People are going to die. Medical equipment will be down and people will become too hot and unable to access their food the way you normally would for fear of losing the last bit of coldness in both the refrigerator and freezer.

I would be complaining but to who I'm not sure. To the utilities commission? To the mayor?

Will hotels or motels be down too? Or will one have to travel to another community where the electricity is on?

Much too much of an effort in excessive heat with crowded roads and freeway systems in Ca.

Insane why not plan it from 10-3 during day time hours, shutting down during the nighttime hours is putting people at risk. Also I am sure the workers are getting double if not triple time

That’s a scary thought. If people’s home alarms are going to be down too, I wouldn’t leave home unprotected. Best of luck whatever you do. I remember our power was out during ice storm 2007? One extreme to the other.

I’m sorry to hear of this maintenance issue. Does your Senior center or another facility close by provide for those in need. Do you have friends or relatives you can stay with?

It may be too late at night for you to go somewhere that has electricity.

1. Be thankful you had advance warning. If you did not make preparations such as filling ice chests, getting battery operated fans, battery operated lights, foods that don't need cooking then the onus is on you.

2. The heat all of the west has been having has been ongoing for an extended period of time so should not be a surprise. Again, you knew what the heat has been like and knew you would be without power for a relatively short period of time.

3. Realize that if scheduled maintenance is not done, particularly in light of the increased demands due to the weather, a wide-spread failure could occur that could leave you without power for days.

4. Again, you had advance warning and should have made preparations. Personally, I would have bought a small generator as soon as I got the notice and made sure I had several fans both powered and battery operated, along with battery powered light sources.

Yes, unless this is emergency maintenance that simply can't wait, I think they're being both inconsiderate and irresponsible. Moreover, that's a long time for a planned outage. It does appear they're at least trying to do it during what would usually be the coolest hours and not during peak use.

The maintenance is being done at night (9pm) into the early morning when the temperature is cooler. Can't imagine it being done during business hours. Advance notice had been given to make plans.
