The news reported today that Toys R Us will be closing all of its stores this Friday, June 29.

I hate to hear it but doesn’t surprise me. One closest to me closed a year or two ago now the last is going to close. I suspect sales are going down because more and more people are shopping online. I’m one of those people that still like to shop in the stores.

I don't think that it was only online shopping that killed Toys R Us. The toy prices were higher than Target or Walmart. The store near me had a small inventory in a large store.

According to Forbes the reason Toyr Us went under is because of a leveraged buyout by Bain Capital in 2005. Toys r Us was then saddled with 6 billion dollars in debt that it couldn’t pay off.

In my opinion, online sales didn't do them in. They did themselves in. Their prices were too high. And, their inventory wasn't that great.

We liked to take the grandkids there once in a while. But, never in the summer, because our local store wasn't adequately air conditioned. I saw the writing on the wall then.

Also, I hated their return policy. In over 35 years of shopping there, I made maybe two returns. The last time, they wanted my credit card AND they wanted to scan my driver's license. Told them they could see my license, but that they weren't going to scan it. A small battle ensued, but I won. After that incident, I refused to shop there the past couple of Christmases.

Good riddance!

Things sure are changing in retail, reminds me of years ago when all the downtown mom and pop stores closed because of malls ,now this because of Internet shopping.

@lovesrecess It's sad to see the stores we've become used to seeing advertised and also the malls closing. Times have changed and probably will continue to do so. I purchased from Amazon all of my gd's toys the past two years. Since I can send delivery direct (she's on the opposite coast) and shipping is free (for Prime), you can't beat it.

I didn't realize any were left. Ours closed in April sometime. I went to look online and they were not accepting any further orders either.

I thought they were all gone.

I went into our local Target the other day and they shelves were picked bare in spots. They said with Toys R Us closed they can't keep up with their inventory..

They were higher but they priced matched Amazon - Walmart etc and they would look it up for you. Then you could stack the sale/price match, with a coupon sent and then with the extra 10% off for card holders on Thursdays...you could really add up the discounts.

@deeva Bingo! When you read the break-down of the terms of the buyout, you realize there was NO way they would stay in business. Understanding how these companies operate when buying out in the guise of "helping" a business makes you realize what is really going on....and it stinks.

Who are they going to go after when there are no more to "help"?

That is truely sad to hear. My kids are in their late 40's and early 50's, and I remember shopping for the younger one there when she was Barbie age. Bought Barbies Dream House there on sale, and Cher's dressing room. I tell you tha dream house cost as much as our first home, lol, i saved and saved. My daughter played with ot until 13,, we put it away and back in box. My husband stored it, and about 10 years ago we gave it to her. Her daughter didn't like barbies, she was a carebear girl. She sold that Dream House on ebay for over 300 in the box!!!

I have never never shopped walmart, but I hear thats where everyone goes for bikes and toys. Otherwise kids today are into electronics. I guess parents buy the other toys online at the big retailer. Sorry to see an icon go!!! What will they do with Geoffrey? Lol

Our huge Toys R Us is totally out. And in our area our mall has been out for over 15 years. The one remaining mall has small versions of larger chain stores as in Macy's or Penneys. Not all that much. We rely on Walmart and at this point the Internet. Sign of the times I guess. We do have outlet malls within a 30 mile radius in three directions.

I remember when Toys R Us first opened in our area when my son was little. They actually put Spree out of business.

This was before the internet and online shopping. LOL

You could shop online with them now but the inventory always seemed to be spotty.

I haven't bought from them in years, even when grandson was little.

I went because GD coming next week -- no big savings in our store. The things I looked for were at 30% off yet price was higher than Target (on sale) or WM. She loves books I get better prices at Amazon or WM.

On the topic of stores "closing" -- they are building a mall w/in 10 minutes from us. All of us were excited we would have a mall w/major stores, i.e., Macy's, JCP, etc. (our closest is45 min away)- today in our paper there was article that "major" stores pulled out, therefore, now it's only going to be downsized to a outside strip mall with eating venues & stores like Ulta, Marshall's, Five Below, Michaels, and a few others. Guess the investors found it would not be profitable & pulled out.☹️

They are also building 10,000 homes, condos & apartments (sr) in the same area...Where are these people coming from? we are definitely having a housing building boom in that general area...they put in new roads, etc. Unbelievable!
