Amazon's New Announcement...

Many retailers are going to be finding it harder and harder to maintain their customers with Amazon's newest announcement. Their clothing policy will be..."try before you buy wardrobe." You simply order what you want to try on...keep what you want/and or return what you don't want in their self-sealing box. You won't be charged for anything until you decide what you want to keep. What are your thoughts on this?

I see this as a problem with a lot of used stuff being sent back to Amazon, then shipped out to the next victim, er... I mean customer.

I had not seen this new announcemnt!

However I did see a thread here as well as several articles lately about Amazon closing accounts due to too many returns. This new "Try before you Buy" will only encourage more returns which is a good thing for customers but not if Amazon shuts your account!

Off to go check it out....

It's hard enough to buy clothing here but at least we have presentations and detailed sizing charts. I rarely buy clothing from Amazon because they only offer a few photos and very general size charts.

This concept has been around for awhile but with specialty stores; I've seen "unboxing" and "tryons" via YouTube and overall, the concept works very well. Customers are pleased and as long as everyone follows the rules, it works.

Notice that set of words: EVERYONE FOLLOWS THE RULES.

You know, you JUST know, that there will be those who won't and it will ruin it for everyone else.

Beyond that, the few that i've seen, the quality has been good and there is a quick turn around time for the return of what you don't want. Meaning, you don't have 30 days; it's more like 3 (postmark within 72 hours). Again, I've seen videos for clothing as well as accessories.

This is interesting. I dont order a lot of clothes on line because I dont want to deal with returning. If people are just trying on and returning, that is not a bad thing. I liken it to trying them on at the store. If they are really wearing the clothes and then returning them stinky, that will be the problem if that is how the next person will get them. I cant imagine they will not have a problem with dressier dresses. Women now buy them, wear them to their events and then return them to the store.

I dont think this should affect the returning policy if that is what they are offering. If it does, well then that is silly of them. Time will tell.

I am getting back into going to brick n mortar stores for most everything that I can as long as they are around. I dont always appreciate the service in them but it gets me walking around more.

I'm not a big fan of Amazon anyway, so I won't be interested in this.

I never buy clothing online, unless it is something I already own and know the fit, then want more.

I, like a few others here, can see the pitfalls in this. And the costs of it will be passed on in the price of the clothing. They aren't going to eat all that shipping and what comes from the abuse of the offer. The customer will.

I'll pass.

Exactly. How can they implement this when they are cracking down on people returning too many items?

I order clothes and shoes from Amazon because I always check there after I find something elsewhere and Amazon is usually cheaper with free shipping. I don't see how it's any different than ordering from anywhere else. I've ordered things from the Q and elsewhere that had obviously been worn and not just tried on.

I didn’t see an announcement, but noticed some clothing items were marked “Try Before You Buy” the last time I was looking at clothing on Amazon. We buy a lot of merchandise from Amazon. We keep most of it, but return anything we don’t like and have never had a problem (knock on wood). I’ve bought some clothing from Amazon, including dresses for weddings. The quality has been very good to excellent and the prices can’t be beat, especially when they ship for free in 2 days. Some of the size charts are specific to the garment, while others are the generic Amazon size charts. I appreciate the fact that reviews show the size of the garment that the reviewer bought, so I can focus on the reviews by those who wear clothes in my size range. I agree that everyone has to follow the rules for this to work. I wouldn’t buy used or soiled clothing in a store unless it was clearly marked and the price deeply discounted. That applies to online purchases as well.

I think this is going to open up a wider field day for impulsive/compulsive shoppers.

I also question a credit card not being charged immediately; with stolen identities and stolen cc numbers, it extends the time for a victim of fraud to be notified.

If somebody used my cc illegally, I would want to be notified immediately, that day.

I also disagree that Amazon has the best prices all the time.

And yes, there will be outliers who abuse the program.

I knew an old friend who would wait until the 31st day of her 30-day return for so.many.things...and then complain when there were issues. I just shook my head. 3 days will be a challenge for many....especially if it includes weekends/holidays, etc.

I didn't see the announcement so maybe my questions were addressed.

What is the time frame for trying these clothes and returning them?

Are there going to be large, prominent tags or something on the clothes to prevent someone from ordering, wearing for work or special event, then sending back?

I'm assuming if someone is doing what I posted above just to have a no cost wardrobe, and they aren't keeping anything, they will be kicked out of the program?

I cannot imagine ordering clothing from Amazon unless you know what you want. For instance, you know a brand and order it from Amazon because it's cheaper. But to just randomly go on the website and try and order clothing? I couldn't do it. It's just too much stuff.

Geez how many times do consumers shopping in brick and mortar stores try on/buy clothing that has been returned??You are naive to think that everything you buy in a store is brand spanking new and never worn!!!

I heard several times, just as recently as yesterday on NBC news, that Amazon plans on getting into the pharmacy business. We have several Rite Aid that are closing in my area and if you have a prescription there, it can be transferred to Walgreens. Also on the news is that CVS is buying Aetna.

This is not their clothing policy in general, this is their Prime Wardrobe service. It's a new service meant to compete with services like Stitch Fix, Gwynie Bee, and others. It doesn't apply to anything outside of the Prime Wardrobe service.

Stitch Fix and Gwynnie Bee have been very successful with their subscriptions box services.
