I was about 24 or 25 when nurses started being allowed to wear pants uniforms to work, so that was around 1973 - 74. My first job where nurses wore scrubs & walking shoes instead of white uniforms, clinic shoes and caps was in 1982. I was the happiest nurse on earth to get rid of those caps. I suppose nurses now a days have never even worn a cap or a wool cape instead of a coat.

We dressed in that era. Remember, pantsuits -- revolutionary attire that they were -- did not start pushing into our wardrobes until the early 1970s.

Women wore dresses or skirts in the '60s. Jeans started to take hold then, too.

Freshman year in college we could not wear pants. Skirts and dresses only. The guys didn't have to wear ties and such but had to have either button down shirts or polos with regular pants; khakis were allowed.

2nd year the codes were cancelled; jeans were even allowed but with discretion-they had to be neat, not faded/torn/etc. Many of us women still put on a skirt or dress here and there.

By Junior year students wore whatever they wanted to wear and jeans were pretty much all you saw.

I remember garter belts for heaven's sake. LOL What a day when pantyhose made a debut.

And don't forget your shoes had to match your purse.

I really liked those older Cutlass cars. I always thought they were really classy for a sporty car. I bet you had fun driving your Cutlass! The car in the picture, I believe, was the last model Buick made with the name 'Special'. The name was changed to 'Skylark' after they started a new body style but it had the same engine and all. They sure don't make cars like they use to. @BirkiLady

I attended a high school in a city. We had a dress code at the time and it was strict. Girls couldn't wear pants , only dresses and skirts. The boys had to wear suits. This was a public school with almost 3000 pupils . I graduated in 1963, went off to college and a few years after college began my career in the school system. I was assigned to my alma mater around 1972. To say things had changed since I graduated would be an understatement. The dress code was gone among many other strict rules and the pupils could wear just about anything! I won't even go into some of the outfits but jeans, shorts when the hot weather came were the thing for both sexes and whatever tops they threw on. In a nutshell many students wore inappropriate attire.

Fast forward many years after, the Superintendent decided that every pupil had to wear a uniform, choice of color pants, two colors and shirts with the school's emblem on them. At first I thought this terrible, public schools wearing uniforms! But the urban population abused the dress code and the parents obviously didn't know what their children left the house in or didn't care.

When the uniform were introduced I was completely for it! The pupils looked so neat, no fashion competition, It didn't cost a lot for clothes since many families were financially struggling and the kids didn't seem to mind. It was definitely a step in the right direction and became the norm thereafter . Most importantly it gave the youngsters pride in themselves, self respect and some dignity.
