Extended Warranties New Car Purchase

Just looking for advice. I "get" the extended warranty on car service.

But we are being offered a warranty on 1.tires 2. rims 3 windshields 4. loss of electronic keys 5. dings on car surfaces from parking lot damage. The price tag is 3 grand. Do I ignore this and just take a chance. I know many of these items are very expensive but I am wondering if it is worth the extra purchase on top of the price of the car. We are talking about a RAV 4 2018. And at our age this just might be our last car since we keep them for 10 years or better.

It's a diffcult decision for sure.... we tend to keep our cars 10 years minimum too but we've gotten bumper to bumper ones before (and they are not cheap) and have been so relieved when we've needed it, and we have.... we had a racy Mazda that blew it's transmisson and cracked it's block a few months after the warranty expired....~whew~

Replacing the keys will break you. They are super expensive.

Unless you have specialty race tires or do excessive highway or back road driving, you can skip the tire warranty.

You should have windshield coverage with your car insurance. I believe mine is a $25 or $50 deductible and windshield replacement usage doesn't increase your insurance rates.

Rims? No.

Dings on the car? It depends on how you feel about dings, but I would say no. I just bought a car in August and I didn't even have it a month and the hood has a scratch in it from driving on the highway and a rock hit it.

I would not buy this kind of warranty. It can be very expensive. The service I saw was only for two years..

I know I would not spend $3,000 for the things you mention. Most people don't repair small dings or they buy paint at the parts dept and touch them up. Your insurance usually covers windshields. As for tires, what sort of allowance do they offer? I bet they don't pay for the creme de la creme of tires. For what period are these things covered?

I purchased a new Honda Civic a year ago.We purchased a 7 year extended warranty for repairs,not for scrapes or loss of keys.It cost us $1200. I personally would not spend $3000 on a warranty for the items you mentioned.

Your auto insurance would cover you for a broken or cracked windshield.If you have full glass coverage it won’t even be subject to your deductible.

Tires usually last several years or longer depending on your driving habits.

What are the chances of you losing both your keys?

All cars get dings.Is it really something you’re going to worry about?

I would save my money!!

I wouldn't buy that type of warranty and I certainly wouldn't pay the price they gave you, $3000. No matter what warranty you do buy, if any, always dicker with them because they'll come down quite a bit on the cost of it. And, if they don't go online and purchase a genuine Toyota extended warranty. Our last Toyota, they quoted us $2500. , we said no but, after looking online, bought the exact same one from a dealer in Massachusetts for $1000. We told our dealer how much we paid, they agreed it was the exact same one they tried to sell for over 2K.

When we bought out 2016 Kia we also were offered many “extras”. The only one we bought was $400 for all oil changes for as long as we own the car. With oil changes costing about $50, we figured this would be worth it.... we have had several free oil changes since the purchase in 2016

but I heard later somewhere that if the dealership ever gets bought out, the free oil changes probably would no longer be valid. So, maybe it was not a good deal after all.

We purchased bump-to-bump extended warranty for our two vehicles but nothing else. It’s a salesman’s job to persuade new car owners to purchase all these extra warranties when there’s probably no need. Adds to his commission I’m sure.

I wouldn't pay 3000 for the coverage you are being offered. Even the key fob can be replaced (via Ebay or Amazon) for $200. We only bought extended warranties twice (for two cars purchased within 2 weeks of one another) ; they were a complete waste and we keep our cars in excess of ten years of at least 200,000 miles. We bought a newer (not new) car 2 weeks ago and when we had the obligatory meeting with finance manager I said "don't bring up warranties, we self insure". The way most cars are built today, with routine oil changes and tire rotation (replacement) 50,000 mile checkups seem to cover it for us. Btw we use electronic tiles (and an engraved "if lost call xxxxxxxxxx"),to protect our expensive fobs.

@SeaMaiden You’re right about the dealership.If they sell you will probably lose your free oil changes.In 2001 I bought a new Toyota Corolla.It came with free oil changes for as long as I own the car.

Two years later the dealership changed hands.When I called to make an appointment for my oil change I was told that it was no longer free.I never went back.They were more expensive than my mechanic.

@bonnielu When we bought my car we also purchased a 5 year extended warranty. It was about $1,200 and has covered major ( hurricane damage ) and minor dings. The $3,000 price sounds very expensive, but it probably depends on your insurance company. We did not buy our extended warranty from the dealership.

I would consider a warranty that covered the major components of the car. Like the engine, heat, sunroof, etc. I wouldn't for tires, fobs, windsheild.

We bought a new truck(yrs ago) and the extended warranty. I read that thing forward, backward and up and down. Turns out the one thing NOT covered were the PLASTIC BOLTS holding the transmission, needless to say, they broke and transmission fell out.-----tedEbear BIG NO!!!

I purchased an extended warranty on my current Forester. I figured it might be the last car I'd buy (probably not the case though), so for the first time I went with it.

Anyway, the warranty was $1400, no deductible, bumper to bumper, 7 years or 84,000 miles. Something like that. So, of course, nothing has gone wrong and not only that, after I'd bought this through the dealer, Subaru sent me an offer for an extended policy for about half the price!

When we bought my DH's Forester in 2015, I immediately said "No extended warranty. Not remotely interested!"

Yes, things can go wrong, but with the first 3 years new cars are covered (or even longer with some brands).

$3000??? Not in a million years. Put it in the bank or somewhere to get interest on it and use it to cover anything that might happen.

(Interesting fact: when I lived in England, VW offered extended warranties. You could cover your car for five years and if you didn't have to make a claim in that time, you got your money back. I took that warranty and ended up with my money back!)

@bonnielu, save your money. RAV4 is a very reliable vehicle. $3k is way too much for a warranty.

I bought an extended warranty years ago on a Honda Accord. Waste of money, never did it again. That is how they make their $.

I can't believe for a second he quoted you three grand for an extended warranty. I've purchased 8 Toyota Camry's over the years, and right now, I own a 2017 xle hybrid. With all these purchases, I have always extended the free 2 year service, and extended the warranty. With the two policies, they were under 1,000 dollars. I know Toyota very well, and I just can't believe the price you quoted. This guy is scamming you!
