"Posting in the wrong forum"?

It was brought to my attention recently that I may be posting some of my threads in the wrong forum (mainly Community Chat). I have a couple of thoughts/questions about that.

First of all, I see many posts in Community Chat that should probably be posted in different forms (according to some who are bothered by this), BUT it makes absolutely no difference to me! I have been posting on these boards for several years now, and I never remember there being a problem with this before.

When did it become so annoying/irritating/offensive (or whatever you want to call it) to post in the "wrong" forum? When did it become such a problem that it warrants snarky and unkind comments?

@Sue98 Just like in real life, there are always going to be those "snarky" people. I would just ignore them. Many times a thread could fit into more than one category anyway. We have bigger problems to worry about, don't we?

It doesn't bother me when people post in the wrong forum. I just feel bad, because I know there are some forums that people never go in, and you'd have a much better discussion about specific subjects in specific forums where people with those interests might visit more frequently.

The moderators seem to agree with those that report a thread is in the "wrong" forum. I too thought it just made it harder to get responses especially when your thread is important to you. Too bad those who report can't understand that.

If I see a post that is clearly about, say, shoes but posted in some random forum, I wonder the reason unless maybe it's from a newbie.

But I'm fine with most topics posted here in CC because CC seems like a grab bag kind of forum.

Either way it's for the mods to figure out, not me.

I don't pay attention to which forum something is posted in. I just look at the list of most recent posts. I can understand that it would be slightly annoying if someone just wanted to look at, say, book club, and found a post about a celebrity. But not highly annoying.

@Sue98 ... Post where you want. Yes, some forums are better for some questions or whatever, but as has been said ... Not everyone checks out other areas around here. I'm guilty of that. CC is my "comfort space". I wander around sometimes, but not everywhere.

Don't worry about what others say. Some are offering advise and some can be snarky. Hear them all and toss it over your shoulder and see which one lands. That'll be the answer that works. LOL

I've helped moderate a large forum (work-related but also it was a social meeting place). Choosing the sub-forum for a new thread isn't just about my personal preference or whether it bothers me to see topics that would be more appropriately placed in other categories -- it's part of general internet etiquette ("netiquette") and also normally part of the guidelines. Even so, it's not worth getting upset about and not always clear where a thread "belongs." It's a judgment call, really.

We see moderators moving threads now and then. So, that activity establishes their gentle direction for us to consider the subject matter of the sub-forum before we create a new thread.

If everyone chooses placement of their new thread(s) with no consideration of the subject-matter of the sub-forum... what's the point of having sub-forums? Clearly, some topics fall into many categories so we have to make a decision. However, many people gravitate to the sub-forums that are of interest to them, or they have expertise in that area. So, in general, it makes more logical sense to start threads there, to have a conversation with people interested in that category. And... that's why a chat board offers us sub-topics.

@Regal Bee It isn't always a mistake. Some people post in the wrong forum intentionally because they've made "friends" in that forum and post something completely off topic there so the people they want to see the post will see it. I find it irritating if I go to the fashion forum to read about exactly that - fashion - and see completely off topic threads there, where people have posted deliberately so that certain other people will see the thread. Ugh. Why have the board divded up into forums if people post deliberately off topic things in those forums? Waste of my time to go to the fashion forum and see something about someone's mother-in-law's situation, or whatever.

On most boards (like every other one in the universe, probably), it is just considered basic etiquette to post in the appropriate forum, just like not posting in all caps or all bolded.

It seems like this board might even need a 'Royal Wedding' forum, for criminy sakes. I don't think I remember ever seeing this much threadbombing on a single subject.

More threads are STILL being added and what is even more annoying is that some of them don't have proper thread titles (another general board rule - well, everywhere but here) so you don't know that it's about that subject until you open the thread.

Anyhoo, I'm not stressing any of it. But it does make for a better experience for most when everybody plays by the same rules.

The "forum police" are the Mods - and they can and will move threads out of the wrong forums.

@dooBdoo Very well stated. I agree with you - it is inconsiderate of others to start a completely off topic thread in a particular forum.
