I Need To Vent

I took my 90 year old mother to the doctor yesterday. She walks with a walker and isn’t in the best of health. The doctor shares an office with his associate ( there is also additional tests done there) so it is quite busy. The parking lot isn’t large, doctors are assigned spots, there are signs you will be towed if you don’t park accordingly. The office has only 8 spots, it’s a joke. I get to the appointment an hour early because I know I might have to wait for a parking spot. I’m in the lot with my car running just waiting for someone to come out ( not in anyone’s way, you can clearly see me and know I’m waiting). I’m sitting for over 30 minutes when this old guy comes into the parking, realized he couldn’t park in this other spot ( nearly backing into me), then proceeded to cut in front of me. He came along and waited all of 2 minutes, when someone came out and moved their car, he parked in the spot! Now if you knew me you would know I’m not the confrontational type. I got out of my car and yelled at him, I have waited 30 minutes, you just got here, didn’t you see me( he claims he didn’t which was a lie), he told me to calm down! I waited 10 more minutes to get a parking space. Then I had to look at his face while in the waiting room.

Is it possible to go by cab or have a friend drop you off? I don't know what else you can do, but change Drs., and if your mother is getting good care that might not be a good idea

Some people are just inconsiderate. If you mention this to your Dr. I don't think it will do any good.

@Jordan2 HE was RUDE. He should have appologized and moved OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE. But he was an AH. You had every right to say something to him. And to have to sit with him inside....hmmm.... I do not know how well I would have handled that one.

OK, you have vented....he knows he has lied and what he did was grossly unfair. What goes around, comes around....he will get the same treatment later.

Please let the anger go....it is unhealthy to keep it and your mother is probably still upset that you were put in that position.

I think that this drs office and the drs are also rude not to rent a place with adequate parking.... especially with older clients that need easy access to and from the office. I would ask them why they choose to put the patients in such a predicament to have to fight and wait for 8 parking spaces????? Let them know what happened.... that is upset your Mom( push the Mom card)

I can understand your frustration. It was very rude. Would an uber or lyft work for you? Much easier and no nightmares for you.

@SeaMaiden, believe me, they could use the whole parking lot! My mother felt bad, she was telling me to drop her off, and I could meet her upstairs. There is no way I was going to do that ( if I had another person with me I could have). Things won’t change, the office is aware of the problematic parking. I always try to get an early appointment, but unfortunately things don’t always work.

@Jordan2 The suggestion of the uber or taxie makes sense here. Can you afford this? It might be worth the extra cost for the convience for both you and your Mom.

@SeaMaiden, the doctor is several towns away, it would be an expense. As for going to a new doctor, my mother is 90 and has been going to this doctor for more years than I can count. She adores him, I see him too, he always takes time with you and you never feel rushed. At her age I can’t see making a change.

I agree with Seamaiden, the docs are terribly inconsiderate to all their patients. If it were me I would find another doctor and tell the present doctors why.

There should be NO reason why a patient should have to be at the office an hour early for their appointment.

At my age I am forced to go to a number of different specialists to deal with a multitude of health issues Parking issues differ, but they exist everywhere. You state that this was an "old guy". I 'm an "old gal" and I know that if I encountered you sitting in a parking lot I might well assume that you were waiting for someone to meet you after their appointment was over. Not necessarily that you were waiting for a parking spot. Did you have a blinker on or were you just sitting there? How could he know your car was running?

You may be fortunate enough to be an "old gal" one day. (unless getting this upset over nothing causes a heart attack). Either way this "old guy" needed to get in for his appointment. Given an empty space that he could get to, I can't say he did anything wrong. Try to find something worthwhile to freak out over. You'll live longer. And really you didn't have to look at his face - pick up a magazine or something.

I agree. I think it's ridiculous that you have to arrive an hour early just to sit & wait for a parking spot. I would let the doctor know how frustrating it is just to park to see him. All that frustration leads to anxiety which isn't good for your health or your mother's.

I would let the doctor know you are seriously considering a change. I'm sure you're not the only one.

Something similar with my mom several years ago. The medical office building is large and the parking lot is huge. There are 15 handicapped spots right across from the front doors, no parking on the side where you enter those doors. I had mom's handicapped placard, someone was backing out of a handicapped spot, I was far enough back so I wouldn't get hit. Just as the gentleman pulled out, a guy in a red Jeep came from the other direction and whipped that Jeep into MY parking space. I sat there with my mouth hanging open! He got out, used a cane and hustled into the building. He gave me a dirty look as he passed in front of my car!!

I had to park in what can only be described as the north 40. Mom used a walker but she also had dementia so I couldn't just drop her off at the entrance and then find a parking space. She had a habit of taking off in whatever direction she felt like.

If I had run into that man anywhere in the building I'm not sure what I would've done. It probably would've had something to do with the cane he was using.......

@Jordan2 So sorry this happened to you and you definitely were not getting upset over nothing. Being a caregiver is tough and I know getting my Mom to the doctor with her walker is stressful even without parking issues.

I recommend you get a nice bottle of 🍷(or whatever you enjoy) and watch Fried Green Tomatoes. The parking lot scene will be cathartic! ☺

He might not like what I say to him but after I got finished with him he would be moving his car.

Agree with posters who say vent, then let it go. Mr. Rude Man didn't give you a second thought today, so he 'temporarily' won. I know. I hate it, too. I'm sorry you and your mom had to experience that scene.

There's a reason sailors advise keeping our eyes on the horizon instead of churning waters.

@Perkup You sound like an angry Old Gal at that.

When he heard her say that was the space she had been waiting for for a long time, a real gentleman would have apologized and gave her the spot. I guess he was just a mean OLD ****.

Can your mom get a handicapped placard since she uses a walker. Parking may be much easier with that and she can use that while she's with you.
