So sorry to hear that quirky, innovative novelist and writer Tom Wolfe is dead. Author of "The Right Stuff", The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test", "Bonfire of the Vanities", and so much more.

He was a deeply serious writer who didn't take himself that seriously. Cut quite a figure in his immaculate white suit. He might even have worn spats! Not sure, but he was the type who might have worn them, ha.

Very witty and satiric. I cannot beliieve he was 87-- had a perennially youthful spirit. RIP, Mr. Wolfe.

@Oznell This brings back memories of books that resonated with me when I was in my 20s. My mother's favorite authors were Faulkner and Wolf, and I think that had a lot to do with me consuming their books. Look Homeward Angel still leaves indeliable vivid impressions. So sad to learn that he is no longer with us.

Just heard this on the radio when I was walking .. so sorry to hear this ...

One of his other books .. " My Name is Charlotte Rous" is one of my

favorites....moral of the story was that split second of decision

between doing right and doing wrong ... which I got from the Bonfires

as well ....

So sorry to read this. I respected the work of Tom Wolfe, especially his chronicle of the U.S.space program.

When I was researching material on the last man on the Moon, Eugene Cernan, I learned that The Right Stuff was first written as a series of installments for Rolling Stone. I love contrarieties like that: A deep analysis of our space program and its participants first appeared in a (at that time) counter-culture publication.

Wolfe always showed his southern roots by wearing either a white or pale yellow suit. Nothing like a brilliant old southern writer. He was a Richmond lad.

did you see the movie about Max Perkins with Jude Law it is really good , I tried to read LHA but couldn't do it, but found that the movie told me much about his life

Yes, I did see the movie and was impressed by Max Perkins' care of and devotion to Wolfe.

I read Look Homeward, Angel when I was 16 and was profoundly moved. Several books in my life have had that effect.

Several plays, too, affected me greatly and alerted me to the eternal verities of living. Among them were Our Town and Death of a Salesman. I was 14 when I first saw Our Town on TV, and I was so moved I wrote up my reaction/responses because I thought I would burst if I didn't. I gave it to my teacher (his position in my day was called "Core Teacher"; he taught English and Social Studies). He must have been surprised by the depth of my response to the play because he asked me who helped me write my paper. Of course it was I, alone, who wrote it. I bet he kept a close eye on me after that! LOL He was also a pastor on Sundays, so my guess is that he had a sensitive soul.

I took it out and couldn't get into it,

I like to have knowledge of the classics and cultural touchstones but you know what nobody has ever asked me about the book

I just cannot believe how long ago it was that I read Bonfires ..

just another example of how time flies ....
