Just thought of Something--Job Interview Related

Hey everyone. I have been at my company for over 5 years. The first 3.5 years were quite tumultuous for me because we had some people in management positions that were awful. In January 2017 we had a big overhaul with many supervisors and managers leaving (or getting fired) and things improved immensely.

Anyway, I was thinking about a certain manager who left last year and why I never cared for her. I hadn't thought about this in a while, but I recalled exactly why I didn't like her. A position opened in our department, and since she was the head, she was conducting the interviews. I had a coworker who was a very nice guy, someone with the education and work ethic for the position. He applied and she scheduled an interview which was during his shift. We were allowed to wear our uniform but he went out of his way to bring a suit and put it on. We all knew he was excited for the opportunity.

I came to find out a days later that she never interviewed him. He went to the administrative office on time, prepared and before she sat down to talk to him, she pointed out that he ended a phrase in his resume with a preposition. Due to this, she didn't feel comfortable interviewing him and she would reconsider it he resubmitted it and corrected that error.

She had had a copy of his resume for days. Why didn't she email him before the scheduled interview to notify him of the error? Why didn't she point it out and interview him anyway. I thought that was outrageous and truly felt bad for the guy. He was humiliated and left our company soon after.

Is this standard? I mean I went to see an apartment the other day and felt bad for wasting the landlord's time because i quickly know it wasn't the place for me. I've been on a ton of interviews and have never had anything like this occur.

Um as someone who has had a bit of HR training, he should have gone straight to HR.

That is BEYOND ridiculous for her to do that and was a complete morally and ethically reprehensible thing for her to do just to get off on a power trip on a subordinate.

She legally didn't break any HR laws (nothing against being a rotten human being) so they couldn't have really done anything for him.

But before he left (good for him!!!) he should have made sure the company knew the type of abusive manager they had in their midst. A good employer would appreciate that.

Certainly hope she is gone and karma bites her big time.

Since you were not there and are hearing these things second or third hand, I would take the "information" with a grain of salt. Stories tend to change over time and with bias as they are told.

Where I work we hold "courtesy" interviews with people who don't have a snowball's chance of landing the job.

They meet the basic requirements and we are required to interview 5 candidates. That means 4 outsiders and the bosses brother in law.

This tactic isn't any better.

Haha Snowpuppy. The boss's brother-in-law. Exactly. This particular manager's brother was going to work for the company but I guess he found something better than what sissy could provide.

If that is really what happened then I would say she already knew she didn't want to give him the position and was just looking for an excuse to not have to interview him for the job. Sometimes people who have power really have no sense of fairness and are not open minded enough to really do the job right.

Not really pointless if your facts are not true or even out right lies, Spreading rumors as facts usually stops in High School

After being in the work force for 30+ years I can believe anything. The company can be great to work for and have great benefits but you can’t always trust everyone. I worked for a woman supervisor who smiled and joked to your face all the while sticking a knife in your back. Oh yes I have stories but it serves no purpose now. It’s basically bullying in the workplace instead of the schools.

@Snowpuppy One place I worked the Boss told the girl at the front desk he was only interviewing women with big boobs????????????? She would throw away applications she knew the boss did not want to interview.

I could not believe it when I heard him say that to her.

I also took applications during the lunch hour & was asked if they had big boobs. I said I have no idea. I said if they are qualified for the position it does not matter.

We don't know what this position involved. Perhaps it was her way of finding out how this man would handle an uncomfortable, challenging situation. Too bad he wasn't up to turning a negative into a positive.

You have no way of knowing what really happened since you were not there. Why dredge that up now? Sorry for my impatience, but is this your business? I may be bringing too much to this discussion, but I have an aunt-in-law who is always talking about this person or that person or what happened or who said what and it's very strange. And she is always annoyed with someone for something. When my mother and I get together we talk about ideas and plans and, yes, our cats! But in my entire life, we have never talked about or been interested in gossiping about other people, and we don't seem to have the daily issues with others that my aunt expresses. I guess it's "different strokes," but I get very bored with that so maybe that's what I'm hearing in you and it probably isn't fair but I had to explain.

Why dredge this up now? Is this my business? Well there are several reasons. Because I cared about my coworker when he personally expressed how he felt to me. Because I like to learn from other people's experiences. Because I didn't have access to a desktop computer for months until now. Because I'm following all the guidelines when posting on this forum.

I will never understand those who post on a thread that they have somesort of issue with. I avoid those because I don't look for problems; I already have enough coming to me.

I was reminded of an Eleanor Roosevelt quote:

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

I tend to agree with it. Discussing people can and does turn into discussing events and ideas.

I had a job interview in the next city over, to which I traveled through a snow storm for an early AM appointment. At the group interview, which was with me and about 6 interviewers, the first thing they said was "Did you know this was an evening positon? We neglected to write that in the ad or job description. We just noticed this yesterday." Ugh, no, I did not know.

This is a deal-breaker. So, you just wasted my time, the interviewers' time, and your own time. I have always thought that this was such a stupid thing to do, that it must have been some sort of purposeful test or something. (Which I guess I failed). But, what the heck?

I've never heard of anything so unprofessional and mean. I'm speechless. When I was supervisor and manager, I interviewed hundreds of people and if I refused to interview someone because there was a grammatical or spelling error in their resume; I certainly wouldn't have interviewed may people or hired many people. My guess is that she didn't want that man for the position but he was qualified so she needed a reason to exclude him. Yes, he could have complained to HR but that wouldn't have accomlished anything except to antagonize her. He'd have made any enemy. HR might have forced her to interview him but she wasn't going to give him the job.

I think you may have misunderstood the meaning of the quote. The point she was making is that those who talk about other people have small minds, thus not able to discuss more important subjects.
