Kids these days... what they're doing right and wrong.

Generation Gaps.... I would imagine they are as old as time.

My own 30-something kids inspire me, and puzzle me at the same time.

I thought it might be interesting to chat about the things our kids, in general, are doing right in our opinions as well as wrong.

Here's my 2 cents:

Right - waiting longer to marry and settle down.

Wrong - having children before getting married

I think young adults today are trying hard to be successful,caring people who have a concern for the rights of all people and animals.I think they are at times pushing too hard.

Nothing wrong with having kids without getting married in today's world. Marriage is not what it used to be when it was thought women needed a husband to support them and men needed a woman to have his children, cook, clean, etc. I know many couples who have several kids who are not married but committed to each other and their children. While I never wanted kids, I have been in a very happy and committed relationship for 32 years while so many I know have hopped in and out of marriage 2, 3 or even 4 times. To me it is good to see those sterotypes are not being widely accepted anymore.

Right..more young people are getting more education than previous generations.

Wrong....being too eager to 'follow the crowd'. Everything from being easily swayed politically, by following/worshiping the celebrity culture, and allowing technology and social media too much importance in their waking hours and source of socialization, information, and communication.

What I see is a generation with a great concern for others until the opinions of others are different than theirs. I see a bunch of kids that are self righteous in their beliefs, intolerent of others, and demanding of getting their way.

They are taught to scream and hold their breath until the whole world bows to their demands and whims. I find that scary. They are sort of in lock step about who's right and who's wrong in the world. That's scary when there is no room for compromise and discussion. Bad things can happen.

I know you are the type of teacher who deals with junior high kids with great warmth and humor...you look for an emphasize the good in them! I am sure you do this with you own kids, too.

I also think I search for the good to emphasize.

Right from the get-go, I would have to say that the biggest concern I have is due to screen devices and the apparent devotion to them.

It seems to me that the loss of communication skills we are already seeing, which will impact their futures tremendously and already have. This puts their relationships/jobs/community participation/education at great risk of being unfulfilling and lacking success.

Greatest positives: I For-see them managing our country eloquently in situations such as the shooting st

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The students who have been shown utterly amaze me!

Wrong: Too much social media and not enough face to face!

Right: I'm still thinking about that. Maybe becoming more accepting of other cultures, ages and races.

Wrong--turning into zombies, constantly staring at whatever they're holding in their hand and ignoring the world around them.

Right--Hopefully, they will change as we all do as we get older.

If these boards are a microcosm of society, then fascination with celebrity is not a younger generation phenomenon. The median age here is upwards of 50 years old. There are dozens of threads about celebrities in this forum, the TV forum, fashion and beauty.

Being swayed politically is definitely multi generational. Probably more so in the older generations IMO.

As a boomer I remember our parent's criticizing the generaton of boomers for their protests and demands for change, free love concept, etc. All generations have something they want without accepting compromising. I will not criticize the younger generations and continue to cling to the past since I feel us boomers turned out ok in spite of what the previous generation said about us!! Change is inevitable.

@Pook I'll agree with you that Boomers did some good, but we aren't doing a stellar job at things now. Much of the discontent and contention is coming from the Boomer generation, and we are passing a lot of those bad traits along for sure. On both sides of the coin, don't you think?

My only complaint is that kids today are too plugged in to social media.A lot of them lack people skills because of it.

The kids I see today are motivated & work hard.They understand the value of a good education.They are socially aware & want to make a difference!!

Most of us boomers have children who are grown up now. The youngest boomer would be what-54 years old counting from 1964??? That doesn't leave much room for "kids" today.

I'm not about to paint any age group with stereotypes; every generation has to learn its way around in life.

Certainly young people can be swayed and certainly older people can be swayed-but this looks like a back-door way to place blame for one's own discontent; meaning one is also being swayed and expecting others to follow their own piper.

Most of us had values/views/opinions/ideas as younger people that may or may not have been group think; and all of those can change as life changes dictate. We discard old ways that do not fit in with each new phase of life.

Wrong...listening to the advice of my baby boomer generation who messed up their own lives so now want to tell the younger generation how to do it all "right."

@SoonerI do agree with you and that is why the younger generations should be given their chance. Boomers when young were uncomprimising in ideas but age and wisdom did make compromising more of an option. No generation is perfect which is why I find no huge criticisms of the younger generation

I don't see any of this as exclusive to the younger generation at all. Or more so than in older people.

There seem to be an awful lot of "adults" behaving this way.
