I Planed A Lunch Date

It was for my neighbor Barb who retired. I called everyone on both sides of our street and reserved a table. There were 12 ladies and I planned on 3 riding with me, any three.

Susie just knows me well enough to say "hello" but when I called her she did not answer. Then I called her friend next door to her and the first question was "did you call Susie?" I said I had and she said " I'll call her and then I'll call you back and let you know if she is going!" She called me right back with a "yes."

Then the 2 of them talked Carol that was accepting a ride from me into calling me 10 minutes before we were to leave and informed my husband that she would be riding with them.

During the lunch Carol apoligized to me and said she felt obligated to ride with them. I could tell she felt bad but I assured her that it was alright.

The other 2 didn't speak to me through the whole meal until Susie threw a $10 at me for Barb's lunch but I explained that Barb's lunch was on my tab sense I invited her. She then called me something like "got rocks mama."

Thoughts?

Sounds like Susie has some sort of issue with you (not taking your call directly, throwing the $10 on the table and saying you've got rocks). It also sounds like she may be immature. You could ask her if you have done something to offend her if you are really concerned but I usually prefer to concentrate on my true friendships and to not give people who act like Susie anything more than a greeting if I happen to see them.

Sounds like you did a very nice thing coordinating the retirement lunch so don't let it be diminished by Susie. If she doesn't like you for some reason, that's fine - not all personalities gel - but it does not give her an excuse to be rude. Just sayin'.

Susie sounds like a "mean girl".

That said, I want to say that I envy your neighborhood. That you know the names and the phone numbers of so many people on your street boggles my mind. I barely know the peope who live right next to me, much less the people down the street.

Let it go. They might not have been very friendly but so what. You did a good thing for another person and that's all that counts. Say hi when you see them, be nice. But you don't have to invite them again.

@Jackhound Mom I googled "got rocks mamma" and found that it is related to an urban slang expression for "Mr. Got Rocks," and the definition was "a person who acts like they have a lot of money to spend and flaunts it." I think you did a nice thing for your retiring friend and I think this Susie person has other issues. Don't let her get you down. There's one in every bunch. She totally misunderstood what you were doing and instead of accepting it graciously, she took offense. It reminds me of the expression, "No good deed goes unpunished." She may be jealous of you for some reason, and I think you should just keep your distance from her.

All that matter is your retiring friend had a special day and knows your heart to help her celebrate this time in her life. As far as the other lady, she may think she is closer to the woman and should have or wished she initiated the luncheon.

You did a nice thing for a nice woman that is all that is important.

Only Susie and her friend didn't talk to me. Everyone else was delightful. We live in an "over 55" community and there is a roster with names, addresses and #s.

One of my favorite friends (who is 80) originally said she would have a potluck at her home but I suggested we go out so it would be easier on her.

I do not have more than anyone on the street, I'm sure it's the other way around. Most of the time my neighbors see me without makeup and in a caftan. I do all my own yard work and have even helped a few with their yards.

The lightbulb didn't really go off for me until the call. Perhaps I should confront her but that is not really in me. It does feel very "high school!"

I still have to live here and see these woman every day of my life and just wanted some other opinions without discussing it with my local friends and involving them or effecting their opinions or friendships.

Well this is the way I see it. You did a nice thing for Barb and shared this opportunity with other neighbor gals who know her.

Suzie appears to be a b..ch, who perhaps doesn't like you, is jealous of you, and who obviously has no control over her mouth in a social situation. Her comment is only a reflection on her character and not yours. I would just carry on. Treat her the same way you always have. Fair or not, we can't expect everyone to like us even if unwarranted. May-be someday she might have a change in attitude.

My 80 year old friend thought inviting everyone on our street would help Barb get to know us all as she has been working and we rarely saw her.

My husband and I plan on having a meal with Barb down the road.

I'd ignore the whole thing and never bring it up to her. When I see her, I'd acknowledge her by smiling and waving like nothing ever happened. Nothing takes the wind out of sails than pretending nothing happened ..... besides, you're (and we're) not sure exactly what happened.... I'd let it go....
