Auto Insurance Likes/Dislikes

I have been with State Farm since 1981, but this month my bill went up an additional $30 per month because I made a claim. After Hurricane Irma when the yards were cleared there was debris on both sides of the road. A Palm Fron got stuck under my car and it damaged the drive shaft. State Farm paid $1000 for the repair. I am going to shop around for other auto insurance quotes, what do you like? dislike about your auto insurer?

i dont know where you live, but we use ERIE INSURANCE and have for the past 7 years or so. we have been very pleased with them......so pleased that even my mother switched over all of her insurances to ERIE.

prior to that we used NATIONWIDE. they were also great to deal with, but when we got the quote from ERIE it was significantly less than what we were paying with NATIONWIDE.

We have State Farm too. Right now we have four cars, two boats, two RV’s and our home insured through them. My SIL is our agent.

We have had State Farm for over 40 years and not made one claim , except for a car that was totaled..Other drivers fault.

Every year the insurance goes up. We received a RV ins bill last week and it was more than $100 more than last year..no claims were made.

i have wanted to shop around for years, but my DH does not want to hurt his sisters feelings by switching. The bill we got last week finally put him over the edge.

i am looking for Insurance for a better rate too. My credit union has some great offers that I am interested in checking out. I know to check their AM Best score before I sign up.

Good luck. I think insurance is a racket. I have complained for years that health insurance is so expensive because they pay millions out for bodily harm in auto accidents....far more than your auto insurance does.

The reason health insurance pays so much for injuries caused by auto accidents is because your personal med pay coverage usually has a fairly low limit. $5,000 is common.

Bodily injury liability payments are also subject to limits. In other words, no matter how serious the injury, the most you can recover is the limit of the responsible party's liability insurance.

Health insurance kicks in if the injury is serious or the auto coverage runs out. Health insurance typically doesnt have the policy limits that auto policies do. Auto insurance was never meant to be a health insurance policy.

Auto insurance is too expensive. It doesn’t pay out huge amounts for anything. Everything is capped. People usually have 5k to 10k for bodily injury and then the insurance pays an amount that is lower than what you can purchase the same model car for. You insurance does not go down when your car loses value. If you paid 45k for a new car, in 10 years your car would not be worth much, but your insurance probably has gone up and not down.

Auto Insurance is even expensive if you own a clunker. I know we have to I have it, but it Is still too expensive for what people get out of it even in the worse of cases.

In Pennsylvania, the responsible party does not pay for your bodily injuries or wrecked car. Your insurance pays your claims and the other drivers insurance pays for theirs. We have no fault insurance.

I spent 40 years in the auto insurance claims business.

Most people don't carry physical damage coverage on "clunkers". Liability insurance coverage (in non no fault states) doesn't have anything to do with the age of the car. It is the driver that is insured.

If auto insurance didn't have limits, the premiums would be as horribly high as health insurance premiums.

I am not a big fan of health insurance companies just as you are not for auto insurance. Both are necessary evils.

I have also had State Farm for a very long time. Last fall there was a substantial rate increase. Your increase may have nothing to do with the claim you filed.

@sunshine45 We had Erie when we lived in Pa. My DH had them since he was 16 & got his license. We had to give them up when we moved to Fl. Here we went with AAA for all our insurance needs - home, auto , hurricane - everything but flood which you have to buy from the government. We have no complaints at all about AAA,and they are reasonably priced. My husband had a claim for about $3000 in 2016 when he hit a deer, no problem, paid it timely and no raise in our rates.

We have USAA, and have had it for 36 years. We have never been in the military but my Dad had it based on WWIi and his Reserve status (so I and my family and kids are eligible). I honestly think it's the best ever and we have made several large claims (once when our pipes froze (in the desert!!!) and flooded our entire house and once when our travel trailer was totalled by a storm while it was parked in an rv park. They have always been fair and very responsive.

I live in Colorado and everyone here is experiencing huge spikes in rates primarily because of the great numbers of people moving here causing many accidents. Couple this with law suits, pot legalization and high tech car gadget repairs...just getting way out of hand. I'm seriously considering going w/o a car and calling Uber. I don't drive much at all and I could save thousands of dollars and possibly my life.

USAA if you have/had military connection, great cs and rates- my son raves about them.

Met Life-through my union saved $700 last insurer, Hartford from AARP. Had Liberty Mutual before that, raised rates yearly.

It pays to shop around, you can do this via phone.

Re your claim- you were not driving, it was clearly not your fault. Your rates should not have increased.

@conlt All insurance companies do that and if you have a couple claims, they drop you. I have State Farm and I finally dropped collison because the insurance was getting so high and my car is old now. I did shop around to 3 other insurance companies and they were all higher. I stayed with State Farm.

I am very happy with Allstate. I'm used to premiums automatically going UP every time your policy renews, even if you haven't had a ticket or made a claim. My Allstate payment goes DOWN a little bit for each policy term that we stay "clean." My deductible goes down, too.

NEVER use GEICO. Sure the reps are fun and sometimes they have regional price reductions, and cute commercials. Just wait until you have liability. They'll throw you to the wolves and not do a good job defending you. My former boss, a personal injury attorney, told me that GEICO is known in the legal industry for being the worst in defending their clients. Aside from all that, before my accident they increased by policies every term "just because."

Also,remember.to keep up your credit ratings. car insurance companies in all states except CA, HI and MA determine your rates by using your credit rating. Even if you never had an accident in your lifetime, you could be paying higher premiums if your credit rating is less than stellar.

I can’t figure out why that is legal, but it is.

@PilatesLover My parents had Allstate insurance when they were in a huge accident that took both their lives. My father's hospital bills totalled over 2 million dollars after it was all said and done. The other driver was at fault and he also had Allstate. His insurance paid to the limits of the policy without question, and then my Dad's insurance took over, then Medicare. All in all we never paid for any of his care. He was paralysed from the neck down in the accident plus the day after the accident he had a massive heart attack.He survived for 7 months - most of which he was in ICU, and he was on a ventilator the rest of his life. You can't imagine all the legal tie ups there were over this but Allstate took care of it all.

I have Nationwide and I could probably find a lower rate but when I had a kid hit me....speeding down my street so fast that I didn't see him....they "were on my side".

The kid tried to sue me saying I pulled out in front of him, but Nationwide sent an accident reconstructionist to look at the scene and interview me and the police Officer who can to the scene. It was determined that he WAS traveling to fast for me to see him....and his Attorney dropped the case...

@Carmie Because insurers do not rely on standard FICO scores-they have their own formulas. The FICO scores are used to determine where on their own scale the customer fits.

It's the risk factor; they look at poor FICO scores as an indication that you are not a responsible person.

I am assuming it falls into the same legal corner as charging more for smokers, e.g., for life insurance.

After the experience I just had with State Farm who I have had my entire life, I'm looking to switch away from them too.

I was treated like a criminal when another driver ran a stop sign. Both of us had State Farm and they protected the heck out of the at fault driver and made me jump through hoops and do their job so I could get my car fixed.

They were incensed I wouldn't use my own policy because the other driver wouldn't cooperate at first. Excuse me? How about I put the repairs on your insurance and you can pay for it? The other guy started cooperating after I made one text and I got my car repaired on his insurance. I'm still not over it. What am I paying SF for anyway?

My entire family has gone I believe to American Family and are very happy with them. I have AAA so I may be getting quotes from them and others when my insurance comes up again in July. I too have been getting major premium hikes for no good reason and I am over it and the unprofessionalism.

@Laura14 that is so frustrating. I had an accident several years ago on the interstate. A lady decided to change lanes, and didn't see me.

She was in a rental. It took forever for her insurance to come thru. And then when I finally got my car fixed, the body shop didn't match the paint and also didn't put something together correctly on the outside of it.

I don't remember how long her insurance had, but they took up till the very last few days to take care of it. I was mad at my insurance ppl for not helping me get my car fixed. It was drivable, but I hated driving it anywhere.

So much aggraveation and stress, all because of someone else carelessness.
