Sentencing for the slender man case

The girl who was the instigator in this crime received a sentence of 40 years in a mental health unit. The other girl received 25 years in same. Honestly I hope they never get out. I think they are damaged beyond repair to function normally in society without direct supervision.

Didn't a similar murder happen just recently in Nor Cal? When I heard that recent news a few days after the episode of Slender Man airing on either 48 Hours, or Dateline, or 20/20, I immediately thought of that unfortunate SM case.

Do you think that they were 'copying'?

The victim lived long enough to identify her killers. Her friends, I believe.

One just can't trust anyone now-a-days, it seems.

If it isn't friends trying to sway their friend into dr*gs or s*x, or something dangerous, it's sometimes something even worse.

p.s.: They lured their friend into a remote area. She crawled along the roadside until a motorist happened by and spotted her, he called for help.

Watched the HBC documentary and the ABC special about this disturbing case. Sooo glad the victim has recovered. Hope she isn't scarred for life emotionally.

Thank you for the information, @puttypiesmom. I had lost track of the Slenderman case and what had happened to the victiim and perpetrators.

I remember at the time finding this so horrific. The age of the participants (the attempted murderers and the victim were all 12), the way that the two attempted murderers seemed to reinforce each other's impulses, the way that the Internet played a role in helping to blur fantasy and reality--- it was so nightmarish.

Cases like this have raised awareness of how the 'dark web" can be so destructive to at-risk children and result in tragic acts like this. I'm so glad that even some of those involved in designing games and constructing these fantasy worlds online have started to sound the alarm about some of the unforeseen effects of their work.

The whole scenario had a bit of the flavor (minus the crucial internet element) of the infamous Leopold-Loeb campus murders of the Twenties, in which two students killed a classmate for the "experience" of it.

But thank goodness the victim in this case did live. I read that she was utlimately able to return to school, even. Hoping she is getting the best of professional help to deal with her trauma.

I also watched the ABC special. The ABC special is interesting because it interviewed the attackers' mothers. It's heartbreaking for those mothers.

This happened fairly close to where I live. I watched all of their hearings on tv as they were televised. The Judge in this case, I am familiar with, is fantatastic. No fooling this guy and he’s very no nonsense. The 2nd girl was sentenced a couple weeks ago already and the 1st one at least a month or so before her. Sad situation, and mental health ran in the family. Tough for all involved.

Pure evil!! I wonder what kind of families those 2 girls came from to have raised such monsters? I hope that poor girl can move on to live a productive life!!

I know people will disagree with me but, I believe the two girls should get the death penalty...... we know they did it & keeping them in jail for 25 - 40 years is not going to change them one bit ..... goodbuy & good riddance as soon as possible!!

@January121- I think the death penalty should still be an option when appropriate. I'm not totally up on all the details of the case, but I don't think the victim died. For that reason, I don't think the death penalty would have been an option in this case.

Again, not having followed the case, has it been proven that one or both girls are truly mentally ill? Just because it's in the family, doesn't automatically mean a specific member is ill. I would think that by the age of 12, people know right from wrong, but is it possible that the perpetrators just weren't matured enough at that point? I'm not doubting the judge's decision, it may have been his best option...couldn't really let them off, considering what they had done, but didn't want to send children to an actual prison either. I don't know...just speculating. I have no doubt that there will be various kinds of torment for them to endure in the mental health facility.

It was a terrible thing . I feel very sorry for the victim. I hope at some point she is able to get past this, to have a good life

If the girls are mentally ill , as evil as the act was, and for the record ,I think it was dreadful, I don't believe in executing the criminally insane, particularly children of such tender years

They carry an awful burden of guilt, and shame. I think they should never be allowed to be released again. I hope we are a civilized enough country, to never allow this to happen

Too bad the death penalty wasn't available for both. They are an ever-present danger to society as long as they're alive. And, there's always a chance that they'll be declared "cured" and let out.

Anyone familiar with the writer Anne Perry? She was English, but at age 13 she was sent to New Zealand with relatives to live. While there she made best friends with another 12 years old. For some unclear reason, they lured the other girl's mother for a walk. They killed her with a rock. Because of the their age, they were not sentenced to death. (New Zealand law at the time) but had to have 5 years probation. They also had to promise never to see each other again. Anne Perry moved back to England and became an international best seller with crime novels. This incident, which Perry never speaks of was made in to film.

I do remember something about that case, @songbird. I had previously read one of her mysteries, but was not taken with them. When I heard about her "back story" it was a shock.

While at the movies last week I saw a 'coming attractions' for a move called "Slender Man". It showed a picture similar to what this is all about.

I assume the movie is based on something similar to what these young girls watched on the internet.

I saw several TV shows where they started at the beginning of this thing up through getting ready to sentence he girls.

The young victim is alive and thriving. She's lovely and is doing very well.

They showed her on TV. Her parents were the main people interviewed during the show, along with the main guilty girl's mother.

The girl's father also has schizophrenia. That should have set off alarms to be on the look out for the daughter possibly inheriting it.
