wrote:

@Allegheny

In 2001 I had been experiencing various symptoms but I didn't know what it was. I was working part-time jobs and had no insurance. In 2003, I realized that I had ovarian cancer, as my mother died from that in 1982. I still wasn't able to go to the doctor - having no insurance - so I had to wait til November, 2005 when I turned 65 yrs old when Medicare kicked in.

All my life I had insurance until I needed it.

I was right - I had ovarian cancer, stage 3.

I'm very lucky - I had surgery and chemo -- and "I BEAT IT".

I'm now 77 yrs old - and the age doesn't fit the person.

@kivah I am so glad you were able to beat the ovarian cancer. My mother also passed from ovarian cancer at age 67 in 1979. I believe there may be a genetic issue on my maternal side, with ovarian, breast and colon rectal cancer. My grandmother, my mother, and my second cousin all passed from ovarian cancer.

Last year my first cousin discovered she too had the start of ovarian cancer, even though both her mother (died from breast cancer) and she had negative BRCA 1 & 2 tests. She did have more extensive genetic testing which revealed she had a known gene mutation associated with ovarian cancer. It was recommended that her four children (even her son), get genetic testing.

Even though I had a partial hysterectomy I still have one ovary. So now I am starting the process to be genetically tested. I am not sure Medicare and my supplemental will pay for it without a lot of hassle, but it is something I have to do.

I know, isn't it depressing! How did the time go so fast? Mentally I feel stuck in my 30s, but my arthritis is starting to tell me otherwise. The only thing I was overjoyed about when turning 65 was Medicare eligibility.

I keep warning my nephew and his wife about how time flies, but like me they will just have to experience it on their own.

I was thinking today. I retired July, 2017 and started collecting Social Security. And I started to physically fall apart July, 2017. My knee hurts all the time. I have changed my cancer medication 3 times and still, I have pain walking, standing, sitting. The only time I am not is pain is lying in bed with my leg elevated and straight.

I am so glad I retired. I now wish I did it sooner.

I started collecting mine at 62. I got my first payment just two months ago, in late December. Then I, along with everyone else, got a raise in January. I love Social Security, LOL. A raise after only one payment.

I have two small pensions that I’ve been collecting for several years. So I was really pleased to add substantially to the household monthly income.

My husband just signed up for Medicare, he did not sign up for SS yet. He is waiting until he is 66.

i don’t know when I will start collecting SS , maybe when I am 65, then I won’t receive a bill for Medicare Part B. I’ll be 64 in May.

i don’t feel old yet, therefore I’m not. That’s my story and I am sticking to it. My DH and I starting dating when I was 15 and he was 16. Where did the time go?

I think there's something wrong with me. I just don't feel any different or any older than I did at, oh, age 40. It was a shock to sign up for Medicare, but it didn't bother me. I just don't feel "retired." We quit our careers at 55 and switched residences, moving full time to our beloved lake and keeping our city home as a pied-a-terre. Perfect! Mother is still living on her own at nearly 92, although she was just diagnosed with a heart condition. We lost .Dad at 95 last summer, and he was active and mowing his own lawn until less than year before he died, although dementia was creeping in. Because they were still "young" and active for so long, I still felt like a "kid" physically. May it be ever thus! I am as grateful as I should be.
