Person in trunk?

Today when I was in town, I got behind a compact car with just the driver visible. There was a great deal of thumping coming from the trunk. Even the license plate vibrated. This was not a mechanical sound. Maybe I read too many mysteries, but all I could envision was a person back there with a tire iron. The driver acted as if nothing was wrong as we went from stop sign to stop sign. Anyone have a logical explanation I might had missed?

Maybe a dog or cat in the trunk. Intentionally or not. I used to have a pound dog (beagle) who was trained to retrieve ducks. Anyway - she would only ride in the trunk. Refused to get in the inside of the car.So my husband drilled some holes in the floor of the trunk so she would get air flow. Also on my old MGB the trunk lid would hook closed but was still open about a half inch until you pushed a button and slammed it.So we would leave that 1/2" open for her to see out.Apparently, her original owner had made her ride in the trunk.She mostly was quiet back there but occasionally she'd start jumping around.

I would have taken down the license plate and noted the color and brand of car and called 911, telling them where the car was. It's better to call than to have the cops miss someone or a pet locked in a trunk.

You could always write the license plate # down and call your police dept. non-emergency number to report your concerns.

If I had heard/seen that, I would have called 911 immediately!

If, in fact, this truly occurred and you didn't take down the license number and dial 911, it may be too late to mull over the what ifs at this point. Hopefully, it was a large bag of groceries bouncing around and not a living, breathing entity.

Did you consider calling 911? That's what I would have done. If there was a person or a dog in the trunk you could have saved a life.

Some people have big bass speakers in the trunk they can bang and thump and shake a license plate. Maybe this was what you heard and saw. I hope.

In SoCal this is so common I wouldn’t even have wondered. Raised/lowered chassis engineered to bounce a LOT, and woofers in the trunk.

Let me review this --

you noticed all this action (or what you thought was action) occurring in someone's trunk, yet you did nothing? absolutely nothing?

now you take the time to write about it all when nothing can be done? but you couldn't take the time to write down the license plate and make a call?

I'm only guessing that sometimes children might be 'playing hide and seek' games, one or more children possibly hiding in their parents' trunk, etc. Better to call 911, describe the sounds, and tell them that you want to make sure all is well in the trunk.

Were you standing behind this car or were you driving behind this car? If you were driving behind the car and heard thumping wow! I'll give you a medal for good hearing.

It was an animal. I felt I had to follow up because of all these human trafficking issues. What I learned is that in a certain culture, they buy live pigs from farmers and slaughter them in a ritualistic way, as their ancestors did. I have to say the experience freaked me out, and I wasn't that thrilled with what is going on, but I can respect that it is a part of their culture.

How interesting @AuntG. Please share how you were able to follow up and determine it was a pig to be used for ritual sacrifice.

When I lived in SoFl the most common sacrificial animals were chickens and goats.

I would have called 911 right away.

Btw, in CA it's legal to call 911 at the same time you are driving.

If you are talking about Santeria, animal sacrifice is illegal where I live, animal cruelty.
