Will Millenials Kill Costco?

An article in the Washington Post claims that younger people don't have the time or patience to spend hours at wholesale clubs, buying bulk items. They'd rather order them online. This is hurting sales at Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's. The wholesale clubs have been slow to respond, but they will need to in order to remain competitive.

Do wholesale clubs like Costco, Sam's, etc. have online ordering and delivery services? If not, they should be looking into it!

Yes. But the online store is almost a different company than the Costco Wherehouse. An employee told me that the other day. I think you can actually buy things online without a membership card. My son is a millennial and still shops there and also goes to the mall. He is, however, an avid online shopper and prefers that.

Just was thinking the same thing. They are killing the universe. They are rude, think the world owes them for being born I see this wherever I go. Shopping, restaurants etc.

The delivery/online ordering is not the problem-anyone can do that.

The problem is they NEED customers wandering around the stores making millions of dollars in impulse purchases.

All the same accusations made by one older generation to the next.

We won't be dealing with them. They will be dealing with US. Boomers are getting old and will soon not be a force in running the world. You had better practice being nice to them!

I am a boomer and I don't shop at Costco. I had a membership years ago and with the exception of my kitchen aid mixer and a bakers rack, I bought too many things I did not need. Prices were the same as grocery stores on sale. It was always crowded, loud. I did not need to buy food in large quantity. Not convenient. Once they started raising there membership costs I said I Am Out. People talk about going to Costco like it is so prestige, like going to the Hamptons. Very Funny. Millennials see through the hype too.

Maybe the Millennials are smarter than we think.

Perhaps they're ordering everything online so they can collect as much cardboard as possible in order to fashion their future homes.

This is an odd and somewhat amusing subject.

Anyone who doesn't shop at or order online from Costco is missing quite a bit, and those who don't belong to BJ's warehouse store (even though it barely compares to Costco in some respects) are missing something, too.

You have to first experience these retailers to appreciate them with the savings and unique finds that you can achieve on name-brand goods, home necessities, etc., and then you just might be hooked.

I've been a Costco member for decades, beginning when it was called Price Club. DH and I have an Executive Membership and are on schedule to receive a large rebate check on our Costco VISA credit card very soon.

Not only does Costco sell gasoline for less than elsewhere most of the time, but it sells the so-called "better grade of gasoline" than the cheaper stations do.

For years, DH has been buying new high-quality replacement tires for our cars from Costco and wouldn't consider going anywhere else--with DH, price rules the game, because he's the ultimate tightwad when it comes to paying for the best that the least amount of money can buy.

I've bought several computers from Costco over the years, because of their extra two-year guarantee and technical assistance package, which I have used successfully.

We have two kids in their 30's, and both of them and their significant others (wife and girlfriend) are loyal Costco members.

As long as shopping and ordering from places like Costco or Costco online remain useful and price-rewarding, I expect my kids to lead their own kids into being members and shopping at those types of stores.

It will take quite a lot of effort to "kill" Costco. My bet is on Costco, not a generation of Millenials.

I'm an old Baby Boomer and I have never shopped at Sam's or Costco. Never have. Never will. I've lived long enough to know that nothing stays the same. We are constantly changing and that may or may not be a good thing. I like to shop online and I like to shop malls and shop small shops.

I think another issue is space.

When I lived in a studio apartment, I never shopped in those stores. Who needs 20 rolls of toilet paper and where was I going to put them?

I'm single so even living in a larger apartment, I still don't need bulk items as a family of 4+.

I do shop in Sam's, but it's more like once every 2 months or so for detergent, etc. I did purchase my TV at Sam's though.
