spoke with some family members in montreal today. their actual temperature is at about 5 below zero today......with wind chill temps at about -20 degrees.

Also have friends on Montreal. Spoke with them last week and it was -16 mid-afternoon. They didn't seem to think it was a big deal. It was humbling to me!

Beautiful pictures, and you can see that water is still flowing over the falls.

Because of the massive volume of water, and the force behind it, it'll never be 100% compleatly rock solid frozen .

Niagara Falls is amazing no matter what time of year... the frozen Falls is spectacular. The Falls is about a 2 minute drive from my house and the gorge is at the end of my street. On quiet nites we can hear the falls. Enjoy the pics wish you could see the real thing!

@bunjetto ~ how lucky you are to live so near to Niagra Falls. Within hearing distance!

I have never seen them frozen (in person). My husband and I had our second honeymoon there and saw them from both sides of the border. Such mesmerizing power and splendor! Definitely leaves a lasting impression. 😍

I live about three hours from Niagara Falls and have visited during all four seasons. Each has its special allure. As the photos show, winter is almost surreal, especially given the frigid temperatures this week.

I believe that there's only been a few times in recorded history where it was so cold for so long that the Falls actually completely froze ... and the massive waterfall stopped!

@cherry I think the Falls are sort of eerie even during the summer. I remember standing by them for the first time one summer in the 1970's. I felt a temptation to ride their plunge into the mist below. No wonder some silly daredevils actually try it!

@bunjetto Lucky you! We've been to Niagara Falls several times...it is magical. The air feels different there.
