Lainie Kazan - Shoplifter?

According to Page Six of the NY Post, citing TMZ as the source, Laine Kazan has allegedly been arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store and the store says she is a repeat offender and has been caught on video tape. Her lawyer says it's a "misunderstanding" and that the store didn't give her a chance to pay. The store says she has a routine down and has been doing it. Interesting story - I recommend reading it.

For those who don't recognize her name, she played Nia Vardalos' mother in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

She must not have put anything aside for the future. At one time, she was quite a successful person in the industry.

She must be desperate to do this. I feel sorry for her

I've been a fan of hers for years, I love her. She may suffer from dementia, alzheimer's or another neurological illness caused by her auto accident a few years back.

Well what ever the reason, I too always loved her ,and I hope it can be quickly resolved

She was never involved in scandal or anything like that. This must be just awful for her

first - i hope it is just a misunderstanding. if it is true and she has fallen on hard times one way or another i hope her family and friends step in pronto. she has so much talent - boy can she belt out a tune.

This isn't always about money. Remember Winona Ryder did this a while back? It's like cliff diving or doing drugs for some people. Sure, it could also be money trouble, dementia, or a sense of entitlement, but she's been working steadily for 50 years and currently has 5 projects in development.

@JaneMarple- I totally agree with you. I've been a fan since the 1970's. We saw her perform at a night club in Great Gorge, New Jersey, and then I saw her, up close and personal. She was one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, with a body to match and a voice like a songbird. The perfect package!

I'd like to believe that this was caused by medication that didn't agree with her. What the true story is, we don't know and probably never will, but I certainly wish her the best.

I also thought of Wynona Ryder - it isn't necessarily that the person can't afford whatever it is. It just could be a mental sickness - the thrill of stealing something or whatever. I can't believe she couldn't afford a few groceries.

Years ago something happened to my BFF mother. They were living in Fla and she got accused of shoplifting

She was entirely innocent, and had never done anything like this in her life. It turned out to be a wacky clerk, that accused her wrongly. The poor woman nearly died of embarrassment and shame

So she could be an innocent victim of someone who got it wrong

@Pearlee Gelson's Market is infamously overpriced. If she had about $180 worth of groceries, she probably had less than 10 items.

Sounds as if she's done this before. This time they pressed charges.

It sounds as if it's a mental issue - a lot of people have the funds but have a need to steal.

Repeated shoplifting can be an OCD impulse disorder, she needs help.

For some reason, unless she's deliberately stealing for a thrill, I have less of a problem with those who steal food but still want to throw the book at the ones who would take my car.

I just read the article on TMZ. Yikes - contrary to the photo in the NY Post, in the TMZ photo she looks like a bag lady!

Sometimes people have a compulsion to steal - it has nothing to do with need - it's a mental illness. She needs psyciatric care.

I really can't go into any detail here, but sometimes they just can't stop or control themselves. Sometimes 'controlling' people end up 'out of control', (ironic). And they sometimes become more and more 'sticky-fingered' as they age, possibly dementia (?). I doubt if anything can be done to stop them unless they themselves figure out that it's becoming a huge problem, let alone against the law. Family members sometimes cannot stop their behavior unless they hide the person's car keys and/or follow them around the neighborhood. And follow them while in other people's houses, when visiting. They are swift and quick, btw. It's a definite problem. Not an easy solution. ........... p.s. And sometimes family members 'look the other way' and/or don't want to admit that the person has a problem and is doing something illegal.

I wonder if it happened in the self service lane? I never understood the wisdom of installing those when it was more than obvious that some people were only scanning every other item with no one to stop them. Stuffing things under a coat is another story and not sure if that's what Ms Kazan did, sad if she did.

i am not aware that Gelson's stores have any self check-outs. mine does not. G's is all about service - they open a new register if more than 2 in line. according to the article she simply pushed her cart out the door - rather than through the check-out lane.
