CREDIT CARD NUMBER CHANGE?

Maybe this has been going on for a while, but this is a new one for me ......

I received a requested credit card from my regular bank and it just came in the mail. I peeled the sticker off the front & was going to activate it .... and there were no numbers! I flipped the card over to the signature side and both the 3 digit code AND the entire 16 digits are shown on the back. Is this new?

Any idea why the change was made .... my guess is that they think it would somehow make the number "safer" but I'm not sure how.

Do you have many credit cards with the account number now listed on the back?

That's how my Amazon Chase card is. I don't rmember how long ago I received this one. It's very sleek and black and, at first, I was also shocked to not see the card# displayed prominently on the front.

Guess it's the new thing and maybe more secure? Who knows! I will always be as careful as I can be and hope for the best.

I also got a "new" card issued from a store like that and I think it is to prevent the card readers from "grabbing" the numbers if one of those small devices is inserted into the card slot.

I just pulled out my Amazon Prime card out to make sure what I was saying was true. Yup, the card# is on the back under where I sign.

Also, it's not really black. It's more of a dark taupe - black w/b better, so maybe it was wishful thinking.

The other thing I notice about this card, as compared to all my other cards, is that it is heavier.

I think it’s to prevent someone from taking a picture of your card and getting the account numbers and expiration.

Just a guess though

Makes sense - as long as somebody isn't holding it with the back showing. All that's on the front is your name, the name of the card, and that thing that all the new cards have that indicate it's the new type that you insert in the slot instead of swiping. (hope that made sense!)

But now, the thing is, if somebody gets a shot of the back of your card, they not only have the card number and expiration date, they have the three-digit security number AND your name is on there again.

I just noticed that on the bottom is says 'Contains metal. Do not shred'. Yikes! I have a good shredder that does cards so I guess tht's a good thing to know.

My Mastercard has the numbers on the back.

Yes. Our newest card came a few weeks ago. It wasn’t near the expiration date, so I started out somewhat leary because I wasn’t sure it was legit. Then when I saw the card had no numbers, I freaked! In a panic I thought, how am I supposed to use this if it has no account numbers? Then, brilliant me, I happened to turn the card over, and there on the back was the account number. Silly me.

I suppose it’s yet another security feature, but please, can’t they at least mention the changes on the accompanying literature? Gives an old lady like me heart palpitations!😱🤗😋

my amazon chase card is like that and my discover card is like that.

i like that no one can see the numbers when the card is face up in my hand or in the machines chip reader or slide.

I would call the bank that issued the card to make sure (better safe than sorry).....

But yes I do have a card that has the number on the back....the fraudsters came out with new skimmers according to the local news....I guess this is a way to stay ahead of the fraudsters....

But still....call your bank!

I haven't gotten a new credit card recently, but got a new debit card a couple of months ago. The numbers are still on the front of it.

It's because credit cards and debit cards now a chip to deter skimming. This is how they are now, You're safe.

That's how my Chase Visa card is, and I've had it for maybe a year. It's a little disconcerting at first, but definitely legit!

Great! Happy to hear it. Can't wait until I get mine. I'm continually trying to put my finger across the number as I slip my card into the chip reader.

It has nothing to do with the fact that the cards now have chips. My bank issued debit card has a chip and the numbers are still on the front. In fact the only card I have with the numbers on the back is my Discover Card.

This is a lot safer than having the numbers on the front. When you take the card out of your wallet, your fingers cover the numbers on the back while you push the card into the slot. This prevents anyone from seeing the numbers.
