Bad Santa

We were sound asleep last night. I heard a noise in the house, dismissed it as the side by side refrigerator making noise, just dozed off again , then, I heard a louder noise, fearing somebody had broke in I jumped out of bed and ran to the living room and my ceiling about 3x3 ft section had collapsed

Dry wall broke, insulation all wet and soggy fell on my hardwood floor bits of insulation on my side table and lamp , some on my new couch, insulation had blew everywhere. I hollered for husband he came a-running LOL

He saw it and hollered WTF ! I said Santa came in thru the ceiling instead of the fireplace.

Now, we're trying to get somebody to shut off the humidfier to the furnace up in the attic. Must of been the culprit only source of water up there, plus, I got to get somebody who does drywall.

@SharkE That would have really scared me. Sounds like a mess.

I’ve never heard of a humidifier up in an attic but I live in the Midwest and I’m not familiar with what other parts of the country do.

Never rains in Tx. so nothing to do with rain. We haven't had rain in 4 months. We and Cal. always having wildfires.

One time before my husband and another man was up there messing with TV cable. We were afraid the other guy who weighs 300 pds might fall thru the rafters, but, it was my husband whose foot came slamming thru the ceiling missing my head by inches down below. He'll go maybe 150 and he didn't stay on the rafters and misjudged his steps and here comes a leg thru the ceiling.

I screamed AARGHHhhhhhhhhhhhh ! ROFL

Dry as a bone in Tx. why we had the humidifier on the furnace.

We're forgetting that thing, though, going strictly stand alone units

@SharkE oh that's bad right before Christmas.I think you will have a hard time finding someone to do repairs.I hope I am wrong though.Keep us updated.

what would you have done if it was an intruder staring you in the eyes....you should have taken your backup with you?

@SharkE. I told you to get a swamp cooler. Every house I've owned has come with a humidifier and not a single one has ever worked.

True ! In the heat of the moment you don't think and this ordinarily is a pretty safe area, and I got the sheriff on one side of me too. LOL

If I would had hollered for hubbo he would have flew into a rage for waking him up and I'd been better off with the intruder. LOL

we looked into swamp coolers and be pricey to add to house and then the maintenance. He didn't want to fool with them, so, I'll sit in the summer time still smothering like I have for the first 7 yrs.

Anything to do with water we seem to have bad luck with anyway.

yeah, my b'day is the 23rd

That's my b'day present ! ROFL and crying at same time.

Hubbo is bellowing "another **** bill" I'll call insurance and see if it's covered, but, think we got 500 deductible guess I'd better be taking pictures, also.

That happened to my mother's kitchen ceiling when I was a young child. The bathroom was directly above. We were watching and worrying about that stained ceiling for weeks but had no money to get it repaired (mom was a widow raising two children alone). One night we heard a loud boom. What a mess - the entire ceiling came down. Couldn't use the bathroom or kitchen for weeks. Thank goodness we had great neighbors!

Humidifer or a Dehumidifier? Always thought TX being hot and humid and you'd want to remove moisture from building. . But what do I know in snow country.

humidifier however you spell it LOL in Tx you want to add moisture to the air up in Ind we were trying to dehumidifie it because living around the Ohio River and it rained constantly it was always damp up there. Now , my hair is straight, but, my skin is drying and hubbo is itching like a flea bitten dog.

Can't win for losing.

We got estimate for 620, have to see if homeowner's will pay for any of it. Lucky, might pay for 120 if we have 500 deductible.

Wasn't the whole ceiling, thank God. I took pics for insurance will send later

We do too. We were having a problem with the humidifier on the unit in the attic. During the summer it was freezing and damming the air flow. Two bathrooms, one with leak in pipes behind largest wall, another with commode leak while we were on vacation (which brough down the floor and then took out the floor (with varnish, etc.) into the basement - just about totalled the house on that one - repairs very time consuming not to mention extremely expensive. I was looking at rowers (a no go) and one had a water tank for the oars to move through - I said absolutely not; it's going to leak at some point.

hole in ceiling now covered up waiting for paint folks now. Looks better then it did at least. Furnace man never made it but hubbo turn off the water valve to it altogether he just wanted the furnace man to disconnect it , period.

Maybe he'll come tomorrow.

Insurance said we had 2500 deductible, so, guess we pay the 620. Not bad price though for the repair of ceiling and the texturing and painting of the sheetrock.

Hope I don't get copd or worse from all that flying fibrous insulation mess

I put on a mask to cover nose and mouth though. Man, laughed at me LOL

He was breathing in all that insulation. I'm a health nut and don't think it's good for you to breathe that stuff flying thru the air.

The VERY same thing happened to our friends this summer..the leak came from a plugged pipe in their humidifier, which was upstairs, over their dining room..
it took them a couple of months to get everything put back together again..good luck, so sorry this happened to you..
