Every once in a while, I’ll see an ad (as I did just now) from one of the several companies who either buy up out-of-patent scent recipes and recreate them, or wing it without a formula to get as close as they can. I will be tempted.

My dilemma - as happens to many if not most of us, my body chemistry, and what I like and don’t like as far as scents, has changed over the years. I have gone into stores to smell a scent I used to love that’s still being made, and I don’t like it at all. Also, if I haven’t smelled “the real thing” in 35 years, all I really remember is that I liked it, not exactly what it smelled like. So, if I bought a reproduction and didn’t like it, I’d have no clue whether I wouldn’t have liked the real thing now, or whether they did a lousy job and changed the ingredients - you know they will be cutting cost corners.

Have any of you done this and been happy with the result? What company did you use? Does anyone remember ‘Casaque’ by Jean D’Albret?

DO they make this perfume still?

As for fragrances that are recreated, I did try and purchase a copied one that I loved as a young teen. It was by Yardley and it was called something like - Oh, de London! I adored it and loved the packaging and the bottle which I believe had blue and green on it. It was part of that Carnaby, English, Jean Shrimptin, Twiggy, etc. scene! The copy I ordered was not great at all. I was so disappointed. I really think that if I smelled it, I would know it --- and this was not it! I cannot remember the name of the company though.

I have purchased a few dupes from drugstores, etc. and they are not bad. They seem to be weaker but for the most part, pretty good for the price.

@Moonchilde, i had one bottle of pricey "Casaque" in my life! Beautiful scent, with that warm, vanilla-y waft. I associate it with New Orleans and the opera, as I used to wear it whenever we went!

Revived scents can be very tricky, you are right. I believe they have certainly tampered with my mother's favorite as a young girl, "Quelque Fleurs" by Houbigant. Many others as well.

Let's see, one counterfeit scent which I thought was ok (but not fantastic) is made by some group called "Perfect Scents", I think. Their impression of Chanel #5 doesn't repulse me...

I asked for woodhue by Fabrege, and it smelled nothing like it at all

They offered a heavier version of this scent, and all they did was, mix the mess into baby oil. It was nasty. I wouldn't wear it because it stunk, and even if it didn't, that oil would have ruined my clothing

Some of the legit frangrance houses ,have altered the original scents, but it was because of things like oakmoss being toxic or causing allergies.

I still use Quelque Fleur, and I think its still is a lovely scent. I like the old fragrances, and haven't found any of the newer stuff to my liking. The house of Dior still produces lovely smells, like Diorissimo. I love Grace Kellys favorite, Arpege.

Beware of Scent Matches, they are a rip off

My mother loved perfume, and the last scent she added to her list of favorites was called “Maja” by a company called Myrurgia.

She ONLY loved the perfume, not the cologne or other scented products, and some time before she died, the name was sold to a larger company (I think).

The scent is now nothing at all to what my mom loved.

I actually looked at the pretty long list of recreated scents on one of those webseller’s sites, and it wasn’t there, but I doubt that I’d trust it even if they said it was the same as the original.

About 50 years ago, my great aunt had a bottle of fragrance in her lingerie drawer called Silk Stockings. I was just a little kid, but I loved that scent. Wish I could find something close. In my 30s I wore a fragrance called Inoui (sp?) by Shiseido and Victoria from Victoria's Secret. Both have been discontinued. Started wearing Miss Dior Cherie and loved it, but guess what? Discontinued.

Call me the perfume killer.

I have seen bottles of the real thing on Ebay, but they’d have to be so old it has to have turned. And I know the copiers will use cheaper ingredients that won’t last in the wearing. And honestly, since it hasn’t been produced since the very early 80s or late 70s, I wouldn’t know if it smelled “the same” or not - that’s pretty far back to remember!

It was one of my first really nice scents, brought as a gift from a trip to Mexico (lots of quality European duty-free things for sale in Mexico back in the day). I was maybe 16-17 when I discovered it.

What fascinates me now, when I read the scent ingredients and various notes of the original Casaque, is that they’re nearly all sweet florals, and I’ve never liked sweet florals, even in my 20s! But the base notes are sandalwood and vanilla, which I still love and always will. They must have done a great balancing act for my nose.

A scent I’ve bought myself more recently is Armani Code for women. Just looked it up and the base notes are - sandalwood and vanilla! I also wear Sung by Alfred Sung, and...you guessed it! How interesting!

I used to buy and wear Cabotine. I never could smell it on myself, but every time I wore it, the women (and men!) around me went out of their way to say they loved what I was wearing - so I wore it, even though my nose didn’t “get it.”

I still love Anaïs. For years my “buy for myself & ask for gifts” were Ysatis and Amarige. I don’t know if I’d like them as much now. I loved Pure Grace until they ruined it. Now, I could pour an entire bottle on my head and no one would even be able to tell :-(

No, I have never searched out discontinued perfumes but I know that such sites exist. There are sites where you can find discontinued lipstick colors too. I would never do such a thing with scents because memory is a strange thing, it's not exact. Also the memory is interwoven with our feelings and relationships at the time. I might have loved a particular fragrance 40 years ago when I was 17 but I was different person back then. Just as my tastes in clothing and jewelry have changed over the decades, my preferences in perfumes has changed.

Torn between wanting to smell it again to see if I still like it, and not wanting to waste the money if I don’t like it. I know that my body chemistry has changed as well, so it’s entirely possible it could smell very different on me now.
