Red wine recommendations, please.

I would like to take a nice bottle of wine to my nephew and his wife for Thanksgiving. They are hosting us and I know they prefer red over white, but don't know what their favorites are. Any recommendations from the wine lovers?

There was a blurb on the radio this morning saying to keep it simple as to wine. on thanksgiving. Chardonnay for white and pinot noir for red.

Around $10-$15 Fourteen Hands or H3 red blend or cabernets are both good

Around/under $20 I like Freakshow red or Decoy cabernets

Around $40 the Prisoner Red Blend is usually very good.

Domestic chardonnay is my favorite.

Around here in Alabama we have many wineries, they use different grapes and different fruits. Maybe you could introduce your nephew to a new & different wine instead of the same old.

Because of the wide range of dishes involved, the Thanksgiving dinner is considered one of the hardest for successful wine pairings. Among oenophiles the general opinion, as already stated in this thread, is pinot noir for a red choice and riesling for a white.

If you are taking as a hostess gift for them to have later, try to find out what their favourites are. Or find something different but, still the same grape.

Reds:

Oregon Pinot Noir.

(Soter, Domaine Drouhin, Beaux Freres, Arterberry Maresh, Eyrie, Bethel Heights, Brick House are all wonderful.)

Oregon Gamay (Brick House is terrific)

Beaujolais Cru (Not Beaujolais Nouveau)

Whites:

Chardonnay if going with the turkey, especially white meat.

Sauvignon Blanc if lots of Veggies and Herbal items

Riesling - Kabinett if more savory items.

- Spatlese if lots of sweet items

Gewurztraminer is also nice if lots of sweeter items. Look for ones from Alsace.

Don’t forget Champagne just to enjoy!

Gosset Excellence is terrific and usually only about $40 (750ml bottle)

My husband and I have never liked red wine, UNTIL, we discoved this one. Italia Roscato Rosso Dolce. And it is not very expensive. It is a little on the sweet side from what we are told but not overly sweet, but for us very good.

If you have a Costco, check the ratings of the wines. Something that's 96 + would be good. Ask other people shopping in that area what they recommend. Also check at Trader Joes-- ask at the assistance counter what they recommend or buy Two (three) buck Chuck Nouveau Red or go with Blue Nunn Reisling (under $10) or Big House Red if they have it.

I enjoy a merlot by Frey. It's organic and vegan. So that's a plus plus for me.
