A moral dilemma

Is it morally right to move a person who desparately needs a liver /kidney transplant to the top of the transplant list when he is also suffering from dementia? Getting the transplant will not stop the progression of the dementia. There are hundreds of people awaiting transplants who have sound minds.

My personal opinion - if someone has dementia they should not be on the transplant list because healthy organs are wasted on a person who can never get healthy mentally but will only be progressively worse.So many people with healthy minds die before they can get a transplant.

Is it morally right to deny them? They could find a cure for dementia and the person might get well

I think everyone deserves equal treatment. When you start picking and choosing ,who is worthy of this or that, you are on a very slippery slope

I am sure it is just one of the many factors that are taken into consideration concerning organ transplants.

David Cassidy is in the early stages of dementia- my step mom was in the early stages for nearly 10 years, there was still a lot of living to do.

I suspect there is some form of medical protocal in place to consult when such a vital decision is to be made. I would choose to follow that protocal.

Dementia can progress slowly over decades. If that person isn’t in a terminal stage, yes, go ahead with the transplant. Kidneys are not rare.

Interesting you would deny a person with dementia a transplant. For the last few years you've posted about your husband's battle with dementia.

Good thing you’re not in a position to be making those determinations for patients.

There are guidelines that need to be met to have a transplant.

I think it is a slipperly slope. I would think that most of the time, a person would want to see their loved one helped and their life saved. Once we start putting conditions, when does it end. Where do we draw the line not allowing a person to get a possibly life saving procedure because of a pre-existing ?

I apologize in advance for those that I may upset with this post. I have not heard that David Cassidy has/had been moved up on a transplant list but if this is true it reminds me of when Mickey Mantle was also moved up and received a healthy liver to replace his diseased liver from decades of drinking. He lived two months and a healthy liver went to waste and possibly caused a person who through no fault of their own that had liver damage passed.

For me, if a person has lived a life that has caused documented damage to their body they should never be placed in front of a person that through no fault of their own is on a waiting list for an organ donation.

@novamc1I mentioned David Cassidy as I'm sure the OP's question is related to his current situation. No, he hasn't died - yet. He's very critical - organ failure and needing a kidney&/or liver transplant. It doesn't look good.

I don't think we can play God and determine who is worthy of an organ donation. Those in the greatest need should be at the top of the list, regardless of their mental capacity.

There always has been criteria a person must meet to be put on a transplant list, it is not an automatic.

I think everyone is aware of this but it's not like you just pass an organ to the next person. You have to match it and be the best candidate for it.

You can be #1 on the list all you want but until and IF a suitable organ becomes available for you, you will be skipped and passed over every time just based on sound medical protocol and criteria.

How about those of us who are so inclined make sure we are signed up to be organ donors in case of the worst? If we all did that, there would be plenty for everyone's loved ones to live on when we don't.
