Thanksgiving Visit!

hihi everyone!

i'm hoping that despite my prolonged absence, some of you might remember me. more than that, i'm hoping you're glad to see me!

so ... you've quite possibly covered this in another thread, but i've gotta ask: what's on your Thanksgiving menu? what "traditional" foods do you despise? what MUST be included, or it wouldn't be Thanksgiving? any vegans/vegetarians here? do you make a meal of sides or do you prepare something to take the place of the turkey?

i'm vegetarian, aspiring to return to vegan. Thanksgiving doesn't bother me, because i always thought the sides were the best part of the meal anyway. this year it looks like it'll just be me (long story, which i'm happy to tell if you're curious).

my current plan is to make a vegducken. it's a recipe a friend found for me, and resembles a turducken in that it's one thing inside another, inside another. the difference is that it's zucchini and eggplant and other stuff. takes HOURS to prepare, but it's something to do while watching the parade.

then there's the cranberry relish salad. one of Mollie Katzen's recipes, and i've made it for years. not too sweet, crunchy, refreshingly cold.

thinking of doing a broccoli and wild rice casserole. the recipe as is, is a little bland, but perhaps i'll saute some onions and garlic.

dessert? i'm hoping to have the energy to make a chocolate angel pie. kind of old fashioned, but i love it. it's a meringue shell/crust filled with an intense chocolate not-quite-mousse, and topped with whipped cream. i discovered there's also a lemon version, but haven't tried it.

oh! the traditional relish tray, right? with the pitted olives to stick on the ends of your fingers? celery and carrot sticks that usually just wither quietly away, except that i like them.

so that's my plan. what's yours?

I sure do remember you, and I am delighted you dropped by. We are going out to eat. I won't get turley because they serve corn bread dressing ,which I think is dreadful stuff

Hi Bunny! Nice to see you again!...and yes I remember you but I don't know what happened last year. I hope you are well.

My family and I will be going to my sister in laws for Thanksgiving and we have all of the traditional foods. I'll probably bring a chocolate cake and maybe a pie.

Sounds like you have a lot of interesting recipes to choose from. I enjoy watching the parades too then we'll go to visit afterwards.

Say NO to: Cranberry Jelly roll, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and green bean casseroles.

Say YES to: turkey or ham. Prime rib too!

I like to make my own stuffing with the help of Mrs. Cubbisons cubes.I like to include yams (mashed) with brown sugar. marshmallow. Also homemade mashed potatoes. Pecan pie is good.

Aww, it's our sweet little bunny ! So good to see you. I am rarely around anymore myself but stop by now and then and read.

Wishing you (and all) a wonderful Thanksgiving. We will be at the granddaughter's house as she always hosts Thanksgiving - then lots will gather the next day here at the farm for yet another feast. Traditional dinner, lots of food and fun. We have a new great granddaughter named Paisley Mae so this will be her first big family affair ! Seven great grands, yes life is grand.

Yikes, I hope you are not heading towards Vegan for Thanksgiving. One of my Thanksgiving guests is vegan. Almost everything we have is off of the list for her.

she can’t eat the pumpkin pie ...made with eggs

or any other pie made with milk or butter or gelatin

Cranberry relish...made with gelatin

Mashed potatoes..made with milk and butter

stuffing...made with milk and butter

candied sweet potatoes..made with butter

Vegetable with butter in them

I think maybe she can eat the salad and bread... not sure what else there is.

@velveteenb Hi I do remember you but don't know what happened to you last year.I hope you have a happy thanksgiving and your menu sounds incredible.I think you need to invite someone over to enjoy that kind of fine dining.I think your vegetarian cooking sounds like a lot of effort compared to throwing a turkey in the oven and therefore I will stick with traditional menu as long as I am the cook.This year it will be just my DH and I so I won't need to make a lot of sides.

I am happy that you returned to post and I hope that you continue.Enjoyed reading about your planned menu.You definitely need to stick around this time to keep us all company!

my best friend will ONLY eat cornbread stuffing; he thinks everything else is "dreadful stuff". i like how people have such different tastes ... gives me an excuse to cook more options, when i'm cooking for a crowd.

do you think the parades have changed for the better? i feel like the Macy's parade has become a big broadway commercial. i still watch, but look forward eagerly to the Tournament of Roses.

Your Thanksgiving dinner sounds like the hilarious episode of Everybody Loves Raymond when Marie made a tofu turkey. Very funny Thanksgiving episode!

So happy to see you posting @velveteenb. I remember your various health issues and especially your struggle with diabetes. I have thought of you often and was happy this morning to see that you have checked in. Hopefully, you are doing well and just needed a break from the boards.

You have always been such a good cook, I am sure that Thanksgiving will be very special for you.

no apple pie or green bean casserole? i kind of agree with you about pumpkin pie, but love sweet potato pie.

it's not that i'm not grateful for all of your posts, it's that i've gotta run. taking the car in for a mandated check-up. plus i've developed some sort of tremor in my hands which can make typing a bit of a challenge! i shall persevere and continue my replies later. hope you all have a spectacular day!
