Not me, but my daughter. She received a package from WalMart addressed in her maiden name. She called WalMart and guy said he could not tell her who sent in because of security reasons, but keep the package - a $35 toy. She called back and got different guy who said she did order it and he was checking into it when they got disconnected. She'll call back tomorrow to try to find out what's going on.

She hasn't had her maiden name for some 30 years so this is really strange. She did check her credit cards and bank account and there is not a charge listed from WM. Anyone had this happen to them?

This would really worry me. Could someone have gotten hold of her personal information? I've heard that when identity thieves obtain credit card info they buy something small to see if it's a valid card.

Maiden names are among the info that was released in the equifax breach. If she doesn't get a satisfactory explaination from WalMart she should check with one of the credit agencies asap.

I would be concerned that possibly someone opened a credit card under her name, so that is why she wouldn't have seen it on her CC or bank statements. I used to work for a large bank in the mortgage division and there were so many people who had gotten their identity stolen and had no idea until we pulled their credit report. Hopefully this isn't the case....

@chlema, is your daughter on Facebook or Classmates? Does the toy have any particular significance to her, maybe related to something or someone from way back when? Perhaps someone from her past has chosen that way to communicate with her (stalk?).

That is strange! Sounds like someone from her past thought they'd send her something. I wonder what it could mean? That's really weird.

I would guess the second customer service rep who said it showed that she ordered it, when checking on it, they probably realized that they gave her wrong information and disconnected the call to avoid the caller requesting a supervisor on them.

Sounds like someone knows her, and it is a secret Santa. Could it be a long lost relative ??, like her Dad that she hasn't seen since she was a kid. Sounds like a story on "Long Lost Family".

At one time, federal consumer protection laws allowed the recipient to send it back or keep the package without having to pay for it. (Unsolicited merchandise). I don't know if that's still the case today. If she was told that she did order it using her maiden name, she may have a problem. She may want to contact the consumer protection agency where she lives to get some advice.

this is creepy that is for sure.

not sure what i would do. contact police if another box is received and tell them you are getting packages you didn't order and you want them to stop.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes, it is rather scary. I never thought about the possibility of an Equifax breach, will have her check those also.

I will update when I find out more.
