Wolves Change Yellowstone National Park.... For the Better!

Seeing this short video on the balance of nature In Yellowstone, just fills me with awe at the stirring natural beauty in the middle of our continent, and really everywhere, if you look for it.

I never thought wolves could change the course of rivers, or make little rabbit populations come back and flourish! Feeling badly for the deer, but at least they are smart enough to seek other areas for their habitat.... Anyway, so much beauty and renewed balance:

Hi @esmeraldagooch, I'm open to all info on this since am no expert. You are obviously very passionate in your views. I'll have to look into them more. In the meantime, the beauty of the nature depicted is uncontroversial certainly.

Thank you for posting Oznell. Yes, Wolves have change YNP for the better. When man stays out of it, nature usually can make a go of it, and for the betterment of most species. Well done wolves!

I really would like it be be put back minus the offending post if possible.

The myths and misconceptions regarding wolves were clarified in a polite and non-graphic manner based on my experiences with various wildlife organizations.

Wolves do not hunt for sport. Fact.

While "surplus killing" can occur, it isn't because the wolves are killing for sport.

Other factors are responsible for the remains of the animal being "left to rot".

Wolves will also feed on a carcass that has been left behind by another predator; and it is erroneous to conclude that everytime a wolf is seen with prey that the wolf has killed said animal.

Wolves are not the only ones who will leave prey behind nor are they exclusively responsible for the killing of livestock and other wildlife. Mountain lions, coyotes, and other predators have expanded their territories.

I am well aware of the RMEF and you are not quite accurately depicting their function, support of hunting, and other crucial factors.

At the other end of the spectrum we have organizations such as Earth Justice and Defenders of Wildlife that combine some of what the RMEF submits along with their own research, management issues, and concerns regarding particular Congressional Acts with affect all wildlife. Unfortunatley I cannot get into more about that here but it's out there to read.

The myths and unfounded fear of wolves has been around for centuries; only with humane management of all wildlife can this issue be tackled for the benefit of all creatures.

Thank you for posting that fascinating video @Oznell! One of my charities is "World Wildlife Fund" a wonderful organization whose it's mission is to stop extinction of all creatures on the list.

Thank you for choosing to remove my post Moderator. There was nothing in it to cause it to be removed. Just a difference in opinion on what good for the earth is? Animals who roam and are managed or cold blooded killers who are have been let out into the environment to breed at will with litttle to no managment and now are limiting the larger animals ability to thrive and multiply. If you are curious why I am passionate about the subject. My husband and I have been members of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for many years. We don't hunt but like the way this group buys property and manages it for the healthy lives of all the animals who happen on the property, elk and others.

When populations get large they move the elk to other areas which used to have elk but were wiped out by over hunting decades or centuries ago. Many are places in the east coast.

There once repopulated the elk pay for themselves with auctioned hunts, and the hunts pay to bring more animals to other areas.

Once the government started the wolf project the animals were able to hold their own for a while, but as their numbers grew the wolf pack started decimating the moose, elk, deer and smaller animal populations to feed their growing un manged populations. This has caused dead areas in the west with no living large animals where many used to thrive. Now they are moving onto cattle, horses and other small farm animals, including pets.

Elk populations which used to have many younger animals are now gone and the ususal age of elk now is 9. Pregnant elk are ususaly killed prior to giving birth or the babies are killed by wolf pack shortly after birth.

The missmanagment of the is now like a cancer and the government has now moved these wolves into the central and east coast to do the same thing as out west but now they won't have just deer and a few elk to eat, they will be in heavily populated area with children and you.

Wolves have always been native across the USA.

The migration of wolves to the east coast are hybrids-coywolves. Coyotes were killed and POISONED; they began to move toward the east coast and mated with wolves and even domestic dogs along the way.

There have been reports of coywolves in major eastern cities. Coyotes prefer hunting outside of forests while wolves prefer hunting inside forests. But the mating of the two species has produced a hybrid that not only sounds like both animals but combines habits that before were only specific to each animal.

There are no wolves waiting to pounce on your children. The coywolves are the ones migrating to the east coast.

Also there are grey wolves and red wolves; the red wolf populates eastern North Carolina. Red wolves found in other states are in programs designated specifically for them.

I've seen the majestic elk in rut season for many years at RMNP; I have wonderful photos I took of them. I've also been with rescue wolves in CO.

There is a balance in nature; and when incorrect info is submitted there ends up being a war against one creature over another, and that war is unjust, unnatural, and run by humans who do not always understand the nature of these creatures.

See National Geographic, Red Wolf Recovery Program, Gray Wolf Conservation, the Smithsonian, Living with Wolves (the Dutchers) for a start as well as the orgs. I mentioned in my earlier post.

@MoJoV I quoted a post that was removed in my response so mine also went poof.

But Moderator Beth was kind enough to put it back for me with the advise not to quote.

It's kind of hard to keep some semblance of continuity if we don't quote; I wouldn't have cared about the poof but felt that the info was important to counter some misinformation.

Normally I just let it go.
