I adopted a 1 year old terrier mix a week ago from an animal rescue group. They said she was fostered in a home with a dog and cat and she should be okay. I have 2 cats in residence and she is not okay with them. Gets all excited and wanted to chase them. So right now the dog is living in my kitchen and family room area with her crate and the cats are upstairs. I had to move their food and litter box up there. The dog is gated in her area and can't get elsewhere in the house. My old boy cat does come down and sleeps in my living room and seems to know the dog can't get him there. My girl cat won't even try. I don't want to have cat litter and food and all upstairs forever-it's kind of a mess. Any tips on mixing them? Do you think the dog can adjust? I'm thinking terrier mix probably wasn't the best way to go as they love to chase small animals. She is a very sweet dog and seems very smart. I think she could be trainable. I have had cats for years, haven't had a dog since I was a kid, so I am sort of ignorant about raising dogs. My husband has had dogs, but he never had to mix cats and dogs together. I don't want to have to return the dog, she's been through so much already, but will have to consider if we can't adjust. Any advice would be great!
