I used to join book clubs, get books for very low introductory price, then quit

I'd never join a "club" to get introductory merchandise. You spend the next six months hassling to get it canceled while they continue to charge your credit card.

I'm a work in progress. I've changed, grown in may ways over the years. I always had a nice home and always tried to make it attractive. However, now I am really into home decor. I've become more artistic, I actually have plan for what the look I want and it's fun to search for the items that make a reality.

When I was a kid I always wanted to join one of those record clubs that they advertised in magazines.....Then I saw an episode on Leave It To Beaver where Beaver joined the record club and didn't return the post cards to tell the record company that he was declining the next order...so they kept sending records and bills and he was past due and in debt and the record company threatends to turn the matter over to their attorneys!!!...Beaver confesses to his father what happened and he gets bailed out of the mess but must forfeit his allowance until he pays his father back.... And after the debt is paid the record company sends a letter that they will start sending the records again...and Beaver screams for his dad.....As a kid seeing that cured me FOREVER even as an adult from joining any product club...so I was taught financial responsibility and that hasn't changed as Ive gotten older ..LOL!!!

Lol! I was in a cookbook club, and I got a book every month for about 2 years until I cancelled. I still have a few of those books and use the recipes that were favorites.

I'm now in two wine clubs!

In their defense, in the case with wine clubs (I'm not in the wine business but have friends who are), they do give you good discounts when you join and you do have an obligation to meet when you join. You sign an agreement.

Never joined any delivery/auto delivery program or club. No birchbox, either.

Wine club? My 1st delivery would last a lifetime so no need for a 2nd.

If I need a certain type of wine, I tell the lady who runs the liquor store what I'm looking for and she has good recommendations.

@chrystaltree Me, as well. However, much of the change was result of getting older and having the means to buy better quality stuff. First home was furnished with one of those whole house type specials years ago - - "4 rooms of furniture for $800". Served its purpose till I could afford better.

Second home was furnished with a mishmash of my stuff and dad's when he could no longer live alone. He insisted on bringing stuff of his that should have been tossed years ago, I wanted him to feel that this was his home as well.

After he died, I recently had a home built in an over 55 community and only came here with my bedroom set. Former neighbor was an interior designer for decades but these days does it more as a hobby. I paid her to help me with wall colors. What an extremely interesting process. Gave me samples of things that would work and I chose the one where I'd be going BOLD.

I was terrified and after I had the walls painted, she gave suggestions of color accents I should be bringing into the home and I'm having a blast out on my own buying those.

I used to be a perfect housekeeper...plus my house was decorated and immaculate..not a thing out of place. Showcase perfect.

Then life took a drastic turn no warning... DH overnight was dx with chronic serious illness and between work, going to the hospital for 90-days things took a slide...and you know what..at that point in time you realize the important things in life. PEOPLE..

fast forward - along come the grandkids during the same period and my showcase living room now looks like Nursery School Central and you know what? That is fine...they will be only little once and will always have these memories to cherish and not a perfect living room.

I posted pics to FB and my sister in another state all she could say was not a word about the kids but "OMG..the clutter of toys...what happened to your beautiful living room.." that is when I realized I had it right!

Now that picture perfect dining room still has the nice tablecloth and decorations but they are pushed to one side with plastic table cover over it and the kids have their stamp sets they just got and paper all lined up...and when I walk by..I get a warm heart just thinking of them..

@CouponQueen I love your story.....people over possessions.My mom once said that when you die it would be nice to think that people at the funeral were going to miss you because you were so much fun and nobody ever says they will miss your clean house.

This Fall we "downsized" into a slightly larger home from our small town bungalow, where we had lived for 38 years, to a near by larger community. My DH had started dialysis here and we are literelly down the street from our DD. We had always "talked" about moving in our old age, but I thought that would be years in the future. Gone is our big front porch, flower beds and large vegetable garden. I miss walking 2 blocks to the (BEST!!) IGA, seeing grade school kids walk home from school and having everyone know my name. It is amazing what you can do when you need to. Now we see most of our kids/grandkids every day. My DH can take himself to dialysis and I get to take lots of long walks in a beautiful old residentual area. Actually (now that most of the "move" is done) our life is much easier, but I still wake up wondering how in the world we accomplished so much/changed in such a short time. Life marches on. . .

@CouponQueen I get it - I was dx with cancer 6 yrs ago and 2 surgeries, 8 chemos and 37 radiation treatments and 14 months later, requiring a clean house isn't even on my radar these days.

I used to be very meticulous about it but now get to things when I get to them! I have been saying for the past few days I have to clean but over the weekend did things with my sister instead. I'd heard it many times but not till cancer did I really learn the true meaning of "don't sweat the small stuff" and trust me, these days, I don't! Another change was removing toxic ppl from my life.

I don't drink wine fast enough to join a club. Maybe 4 oz a night for me. Any more than that and I'm singing New York New York on the dining room table.

I do belong to an olive oil club (Global Gardens) and have for years. I'm picky when it comes to EVOO, it has to be organic and it has to be olives from Greece.

@Spurt - what a blast from the past! Not only Leave it to Beaver but when I was a teenager I joined a record club - I think it was Columbia - that sent an album every so often if you didn't send the card back. I think you got someting like 10 free in the beginning and that hooked you in. I didn't last long with that.

Funny isnt it....millenials dont remember cassetts let alone records---LOL.....Yep thats the ad I was talking about for the record club sounded like a great deal but wonder if they even gave you time to return the card that you didnt want their next offer...LOL!

the one and only time I joined a club to get product was when i was in high school. it was make up stuff. my mom screamed her head off at me for days because I joined this club without asking her.

we were not allowed to purchase anything unless our parents gave us OK to anything.

Growing up in a Italian household everything had to be in place.Heaven forbid the newspaper was on the coffee table and company came.Hurry clean up. Mom was a stickler for washing windows( sorry mom i still loved you and laugh when I think about it)..I do keep a very clean house, but I sometimes say "Know what don't feel like it today and there's always tomorrtow. I have in family room large toychest full for six grandkids doesn't bother me.They grow up to fast and I want them to enjoy coming to Nanny 's house since they are here all the time.
