Your Neighbors

What kind Of relationship do you have with your neighbors? Are you very friendly? Have dinners together. etc? . Or is your relationship less friendly....just say hello...wave basis?

I say hello and wave but really do not know my neighbors or their names or know much about them.

When we first moved in here, it was new construction and we were all first time homeowners, so we had the experience with the builders, the newness of owning a home in common.

Over the years, those of us who are original owners who are still left have drifted apart.

We have been having more community events the last couple of years and we are having one again this week. We are working hard to make this a true neighborhood again.

We really don't see our neighbors. The houses are tucked away a bit. No one goes in their front yard so never see anyone. Not a development, all the homes are different and usually the driveways go around the back of the homes. One neighbor across the street on an angle I wouldn't know if I fell,over them. Been here for 32 years. Everyone keeps to themselves, just the way I like it.

Only close with two at this point....always "Hello"...keep watch over eachother.....porch talks, have met other family members....but no dinners, get togethers....just knowing there is someone next door we can each depend on is a blessing....

I only have one neighbor, and I love her. She’s 75, and the retired chief of police from a nearby city. She keeps her eye out for trouble. She lots of guns and knows how to use them, so I feel very safe with her next door. She also has chickens, so she frequently gives me fresh eggs. If I make something like a lasagna or a cake, I always take her a couple pieces. We have a great relationship.

When we moved in, the next door neighbors introduced themselves and said that they bought their property because they value their privacy (all homes are built on 2+ acre wooded lots). That told me that a "Hello and wave" relationship was the norm in the neighborhood. Since we tend to value our privacy also, it appears to be comfortable for everyone living in this area.

We’ve had both. When the kids were little, we did a lot with the other young families in the neighborhood. Lots going on. But that can get catty. After we moved, we are only close to 1 neighbor (dinner, vacation etc). Fine with us. I don’t even know what some of my neighbors look like.

We are the last of the original owners, sigh...I so don't want to be in this neighborhood but, that's another discussion.

In the beginning we had neighborhood bbq's and bon fires in the fall, lots of fun, over the years everyone has moved away....we know our neighbors enough to say hello and chat at the mailbox but that is it.

My very good friend lived across the street and sadly she moved this summer, several states away. I really miss her and the girl friend things we used to do.

We aren't overly huggy-kissy friendly (said in a nice way), although many of us are invited to drop-by various holiday bar-b-ques, get-togethers, etc., etc. I usually bring a few plates of donuts and/or cupcakes to each invite. All from our supermarket bakery. I seem to like it that way; we keep out of one another's business, so to speak. It's nice to be somewhat neighborly. Also, several neighbors have elderly dogs, and we slowly walk around a couple of blocks and chat almost every morning, weather permitting. It's nice for some folks to have a routine, with others.

I have one elderly neighbor who I’m very friendly with.I’ve known her for 20yrs. DH & son shovel her snow in the winter ❄️.I check up on her & help her when I can.My other neighbors I basically just say hello 👋 & good bye to.

My experience has been that when you get to friendly with neighbors most of the time they expect to much.Problems ensue & the relationship sours.

I have a neighbor who is a widow.We were good friends.About 5 yrs ago she called to ask if my husband could move a very heavy table she had.She wanted to vacuum under it.DH said he was sorry but couldn’t do it because he has a bad back.She got angry & said “you’re useless to me”.For this reason & a few others I know longer have the desire to befriend my neighbors.

When we first moved in we were welcomed by an elderly couple. We would come home often and find a hot casserole or a homemade cake on our stoop. We loved them, they became the grandparents we didn’t have. There was a Filipino family two houses away who took us into their family. I became good friends with the mother and our kids were constantly with each other. A family of four moved in next door and we have watched out for each other ever since, for decades.

Add to that mix one elderly woman, a cantankerous troublemaker disliked by all, and those were the neighbors.

A few interesting others, one who told us about a Mafia leader who lived nearby in the old days, one who went on to become a fairly well known actress, and three who committed suicide.

I could write a book on the neighbors.

I had a young couple move in next door about 3 months ago. Haven't seen him, just his pick up truck, but she won't even make eye contact let alone speak or wave.

The people on the other side have a teen son but I've never even seen an adult over there. I'm sure there is one but he/she stays well hidden. Weird neighborhood.

I am one of the very few original owners in my neighborhood. I used to be friendly with several of the neighbors. We would sit outside and talk a lot in the evenings when it was warm. Slowly everyone started moving. My last friends who lived two doors up moved this spring. I miss them. We didn't see each other much, but I always knew I could count on them if I needed them. We had keys to each other's houses. When I worked she would come and let my dogs out if I couldn't get home in time, and I would do similar things for her. She was the one I always asked to get my mail when I went out of town. Now I guess I'll just put it on hold at the post office. It's kind of sad not to really know your neighbors. I do wave but that's about it. I know one of my next door neighbor's names but no other names.

I live in a 4 unit condo with another 2 units attached.

I am friendly with the woman across the flood, I am cordially to the guy who lives beneath us, the other apt in the building is for sale

In the attached building the couple that live down stairs are very nice,he is a great neighbor, in fact when we were looking at the apt he was the first person we met.

I have nothing nice to say about the girl who lives upstairs, (she is a former good friend) she is a teacher and a spoiled brat, no man was ever good enough for her and she was desperate to have a baby, (desperate for some one to love her) and she now has a 18 month old little girl via IVF.

I live on a culdesac with nine other single-family homes in a typical suburb. Other than a rare yard sale or routine comings or goings in our cars, I never see or speak to any of my neighbors. I know the children better than their parents because they like my dog and come over and talk when we're out walking. Not many of them do yard work either so I never see them out in their yards. None of the homes here have any front porches to speak of like in the older parts of town where you see huge wrap-around porches where people would sit and visit. They don't make houses like that anymore...sad.

We live in the country on 5 acre parcels so we're too far apart to be "running" next door, but the community is on facebook and we can know what is going on by checking out our community facebook page. We have community garage sales and a summer block party. We've got our house up for sale right now hoping to sell soon and downsize and move to the city. We know several families but not well.... we've only been there 6 1/2 years....

My favorite neighbor passed away last year. I still miss him. This neighborhood isn't the same since he has gone.

I have one other neighbor that I am very close to.

Other neighbors, we wave at each other. A few, I just try to avoid.

We live in a very lovely neighborhood, our lots are large and far apart which is nice , plenty of privacy. There are fall and summer block parties and an annual christmas party that is always at one couples house that loves having it and it is so fun! We mostly just wavy or say hello with some then there are those we really connect with like our neighbors to the left of us that we see weekly either at there house or ours, we go to dinner together and kniw there families as well as them knowing ours. We invite them to our family gatherings often. They are lime family and we love that they are there , it's comforting g to know we can count on them when we are out town to wTch the house, get the mail etc. we do the same for them.

It's a small neighborhood with only 15 homes set in a lovely wooded area. I so enjoy living in a smaller rural like area. Although still close to a city.

I am in the same situation. I hardly say anything to any of my neighbors - just wave and say hello.
